Kimber rebarrel worth it?

Makes sense. 6/06 is a lot of powder for 3100 with a 115, but should feed well from the existing mag set-up. H1000 works well with 243AI and heavy bullets as does N165. If you can find it RL25 and RL17 seem to make more velocity. I never tried RL26 but would imagine it would be magic for velocity.

I'm pretty much stuck on h1000 for 243AI. Barrel life is stupid long for something that overbore and the velocity is pretty good. N165 has the same attributes, but is more temp sensitive and higher pressure, making functional issues at the same velocities.

I found similar results in my 243 AI’s with 7828ssc and Retumbo. Both worked really well, as did RL-17. That’s a favorite cartridge of mine, super fun round.

Thanks for the out guys. There’s a Kimber .243 barrel on eBay, I’m tempted to pick it up. But without going Ackley I might be better off just selling for trading the 280 for a 84M. I’m waiting to hear back on costs to do a tikka takeoff in 243AI.

Are you going to have a smith do it or try to rent the stuff and do it yourself? If you're going to hire a gunsmith, it might be worth the extra couple hundred dollars to buy top end cut rifled blank. If you're trying to do it on as much of a budget as possible, I understand.

Also, if working with a 243 chamber, it technically needs set back one thread to get the correct crush fit on regular 243 brass. If you are thinking about hand reaming to 243AI, you can jam bullets to fireform, you will just end up potentially having extra headspace on regular 243 ammo.

I’d sell the 84L and get a 84m if you want a short action round. Just do it right the first time. A 22 or 6mm CM would be badass at 16 to 18 inches.

The trick with the Kimber is the extractor cut. As far as I'm aware, their barrels aren't timed so the odds of one lining up from another gun are slim. Maybe they do though.
The extractor cut is easy enough to do on a lathe with a way to fixture the barrel to the tool holder and an end mill in a collet

Well I just shot the 280AI with the 120gr ballistic tips. Not sure what to do now, hope the suppressor tames it down a bit, it’s still a handful with 120gr bullets at 6lb12oz.

500 yard group after getting it sighted in, calculates to 2500fps. 3-4”, that’s a piece of 2” duck tape, and I was holding almost a mil for wind.

I think so, from what I’ve read they do well with 105-108gr bullets, some people have had luck with heavier.

Believe factory 243 Kimber barrels were 1-10”.

95 VLD is probably as heavy as a guy could get away with.

Buy a shilen or McGowan barrel and have a good smith chamber and thread it for you. I’d go 6x284 in the long action.

Between my boys I and I......... I have one with a proof CF sendero, one with a proof SS #3 and the boys both have kimber hunters with Lilja's beef up kimber copy.

Honestly, a lot of barrels from those two companies shoot really well, especially with top notch machine work from a gun plumber. A lot don't. To me, the cost difference between a top notch blank and a pretty good blank is not much. A lot less bad blanks come out of Bartlien, Brux, Kreiger, Benchmark, Proof, Hawk Hill, and several other good cut rifled barrel makers. To be fair, all of those companies have produced duds. It's just that the chances of getting a dud are a lot less, and the chances of getting a hummer barrel are a lot higher. I definitely second having the chamber cut by a top notch smith.

He was suggesting using a tikka take off as a blank so I was giving him the chest good options.
