Kimber mountain ascent in 7mm mag or 280ai

Ok cool. I guess sometimes I over look the older stuff looking at the new. I will definitely reassess my thoughts. do you like the Kimber or is there others that are closes in comparison. Like maybe the Browning Hell's Canyon speed?

My only experience with a browning rifle was a browning mountain TI in a WSM. It is as light as a Kimber 30-06 but in a magnum action. It is pretty nice and I have killed moose, caribou, sheep, mountain goats, black bears, and grizzlies with it.

That said I am not impressed with the "weather resistance" of the materials they used especially the browning trigger. While I have yet to find a true stainless stainless steel it is literally the stainless I have found the most easily to get rust on them.

That said I have my Kimber 338-06 down to 4 pounds 14oz and I like it a lot more than my Browning TI. Plus I do like having 4+1 ammo capacity rather than 3+1 when getting ready to take a grizzly and such.

The hells canyon speed I am sure is a nice rifle but the but I dont feel my $1899 Browning TI competes with a $1100 Kimber Montana 84L.

Thanks that helps. I've never shot any kind of a browning so a little leary. Love shot ruger for years, tired of carrying all that weight. M77 in 35 Whelen.

Likely better than fine. Poor old '06 never gets much love, but it really doesn't need it.

280AI would be 162's all day. Other than that, it's an ugly 270.

ANY Kimber chambered in 30.06 is a very tough combo to beat, especially with today's selection of bullets

Two different rifles IIRC!

The 7mm RM is on the 8400 Magnum Action.....6# 7oz

The 280 AI is on the 84L action........5# 6oz

Hunter model has been running a couple of oz heavy from what I can tell - the magazine is a drop out so you'd best have AT LEAST one extra stashed someplace handy, something to realize is that the magazine seems to be a THREE (3) round affair so when comparing a Hunter to a Montana you need to drop "one down" to 3 (I could be wrong on that but I think I'm correct) The Hunter stock is where Kimber saved the money on this model as the barreled action is the same in both - I have Hunters in 6.5 CM and '06 BUT I really haven't had the time to mess with them to date - I think I like the way the magazine functions in and out too

Not sure what you are trying to say here ? 338-06 and Whelen are same case & same action needed - same class powder charge for either and not much greater pressure than '06 so the only increase in felt recoil should be bullet weight

OK, I get it - doing a 338-06 or Whelen on a Montana (or Hunter) is a game changer within that dynamic

I wouldn't say it lightens it a bunch boring out to 338 but certainly doesn't make it any heavier

I would love to know how the CM shoots for you. It would be a nice backup rifle.

weather and holidays just haven't allowed any more shooting it but so far I can certainly "feel" the potential coming along - I don't wish to start anything by saying this but I would not even consider using it on elk (unless it was a emergency or a closely supervised "first time" situation) but I definitely see this rifle / cartridge as an outstanding deer / antelope combo with a good optic

You and I are on the same page. I have a couple lightweight long range hunting rifles(9-9.5lbs scoped) but would like to experiment with some lighter options for when I do not need the horsepower.

My 280AI shoots lights out sub MOA at 1-300 and 1moa to 500 consistently sure the variations is me. Factory AB 140g is all I've ever shot.

I'll have to agree with you here. I was looking a used Browning X-Bolt Stainless Stalker at the LGS yesterday, it had one season on it and it already had pitting on the barrel. Now just because it's SS doesn't mean that it's impervious to oxidation. Regardless of ones particular practices when it comes to caring for their gear it is still a bit concerning to see that on a so called stainless rifle in such short order.

Looking at buy a new rifle soon I can decide on 7mm mag or 280 a in a Kimber ascent. Also looking at the Browning Hell Canyon. What are your thoughts?

Well I made the plunge. I bought a Kimber Hunter in 30/06 and a Vortex HDLR 3X15 scope. I'll be having a brake installed this week, as soon as i get it all together ill post some pictures. hoping to have some loads worked up by then also. thanks for all the input and help guys.
