It seems like the number of ticks one my animals from KS gets worse every year! I've' had tick fever before and it was NOT fun theyand the give me the heebee geebee's. I just cleaned out my coolers that I used for the head of my buck and body and am a bit creeped out at teh number of dead ticks I found in the bottom! Ortho Home Defense works well around the house, but I'm hesitant to use it on a hide for fear of damaging the hide / makig the hair fall out etc ... I wouldn't want to spray anything near meat, but wondering if anyone else has used anything successfully on hides?

My thought woukd be to spray the head/cape after the animal is broken down ...

Thanks,

Dave

P.S. I just realized that I should have posted this under Meat & Trophy Care ... sorry!

I may be wrong but I thought ticks jumped ship pretty quick. Can’t remember if it was because blood was no longer circulating or a warmth thing but I thought they bailed fast after death.

I have had ticks crawl off deer I was gutting when they were fresh. Can’t recall having issues with ticks on deer where there was a delay in skinning them out.

Plenty stay on - that is for sure.

I get them skinned as soon as I get them home, then give the hide and head a quick spray of bug killing spray. The ticks start to come off as the body cools. The spray will kill most of them and doesn't seem to hurt the hide. I also spray the inside of the truck since they will come off my clothes and wait in ambush for me the next day when I drive to work.

Put in contractor bag and spray raid in and seal. Cople hours they will be dead. Any bug spray would work. We do it with all our coyotes and beavers.

Watch a couple youtube videos on how to cape, buy a havalon and peel that deer completely. Then it all either goes in freezers, coolers, or the unwanted hide portion goes in trash/woods.

This.

Back when I was living at home in New Mexico I used to run a small trap/snare line and also called several coyotes. I would hit them all with raid. Never had an issue of hair falling out when selling the hides to the fur buyer. I'm sure sevendust would work as well.

Here in CA our deer are loaded with Ticks and millions of Fleas during our summer archery season. I found a NON TOXIC BUG SPRAY made with citrus, that I spray on the body right after I get it back to the truck. By the time I get home, the ticks and fleas are dead!!! It works great and isn’t harmful to humans or pets!! Can’t remember the name of it but it works great!! I got mine at OSH and have seen it many places

My bear was crawling with ticks this spring. Hit it with a can of Raid and they all died. After getting the hide tanned it still looks great, with no negative effects from the spray.

I have a velvet deer mounted that still has a tick on the velvet.
