How does one decide what length stays to purchase?

You really should talk to Aron Snyder but unless you have a really short torso you want the 26" stays so you still have functional load lifters when you load the pack heavy and everything sags down. Just because the stays are sticking way up when the pack is basically empty doesn't mean they will still be towering above your shoulder when there is 100 pounds in it.

I am 5'9", have used Kifaru packs with both 24" and 26" stays and prefer the 24" stays. I am not likely to pack over 100# unlike many of the guys here, and think the 24" stays provide a good trade-off between daypack mode and hauler mode.
