I’ve had the same procedure as you, buckshotaz, but there were two attractive nurses. I’ve also had stents that I had to remove myself. That meant when I woke up from the surgery, there was a string hanging out of me. For the entire time it was in, I felt like I had to pee. Then, after the appropriate amount of time, I got to grad the string and pull out the stent. It actually was a much better experience than having them have to go in and remove it. The thing that shocked me is the string and stent were about 15” long.

I was 15 years old and out pheasant hunting with my dad when he got one. I got to drive for the 1st time! About a half hour to the ER.
He had one before, told me I had to learn how to drive or shoot him and put him out of his misery. He was about half joking!

Asking for a friend, what should you have done instead of stopping dead?
Tapered down over a period of a few days at least. That way my body would've settled into the adjustment & reduction, rather than trying to hang on to everything that was still in there.
It was recommended to me, that what I should've done, rather than going from an average 8 (that's probably on the low side, honestly) units per day to 0, would be to drop by 1 unit per day until I hit zero. Harder to do, I'm told, but puts far, far less stress on your insides. And brain.

1:10 Do not Recommend.

I noticed a little back ache yesterday around 5:30am I figured it was trapped wind. By 7:15 I was in the ER & getting IV painkillers (they say that laughter is the best medicine. It's not. Dialaudid is the best medicine!) CT scan confirmed a 4mm stone above my left kidney.

Came home with enough Hydrocodone to fell a zoo full of elephants. I usually refuse any kind of opioid, but this time out....gimme.

First time in my life (including the gunshot wounds) I've ever vomited purely from pain.

Guys. Eat healthy, cut down on the bourbon & salt & drink yer water. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.
Just went through this for the 4th time! The first 3 I was able to pass the stone at home but it still hurt. This time around I had to go in to the ER. Started at 1 am early Friday morning. Suffered all day till my wife came home from work and brought me in at 4 pm. Left the ER at 1 am. Gave me the IV drugs as well and I hate the stuff! Made me break out in a sweat and vomit. The nurse said “oh, your one of those that Dialaudid does this to!” 🤣 came home with Percocet and anti nausea medicine. Much better today but still haven’t passed it yet. It was measured at 4 mm as well.

I’m done with soda now and will decrease my salt intake. Already watch my sugar.

I’ve had 6 stones at this point - the first 5 passed on their own with some help of flowmax and some painkillers, however, my last one was rough.

I was visiting my dad in Idaho and felt the familiar one sided back pain, but it only lasted for an hour or so. Fortunately, no issues on the flight back to Cleveland the next day. I was wrapping up my last surgical case of the day when the back pain returned. It was about all I could do to make it home. Writhed around on the floor for a few hours before the pain stopped and I thought I would soon pass the stone. Not the case. Pain returned the next night and going to the ER was the last thing I wanted to do.

Eventually, Wednesday morning while driving to clinic, it was coming back. I told the attending I was working with about the situation and walked to the ER. CT showed a 6mm stone lodged in place and a few hours later I was waking up after surgery. Had to have a pigtail stent in place for 2 weeks to keep things open for a while.

This all happened a week before archery season in Wyoming. I still flew out to hunt with the stent in place and killed my best bull haha.

Do they analyze the stones? Years ago I had the same. Doc advised me to collect the urine and check it for stones. Did manage to collect one. It analyzed as mostly calcium oxalate. When I went to Mayo for another reason, the nephrologists made a big deal out of it as I recall. They advised not eating foods high in oxalate and that included draft beer, especially MGD.

My last one came back as calcium oxalate as well - it's the most common type of stone. They mentioned decreasing salt intake, reducing meat, and hydrating as well.

They told me to follow up with a urologist or let my family practitioner know. Said they can give you a filter now that will catch the stone so they can analyze it. I plan on doing everything I can to not have to go this route. I’m sure I’ll have more but hopefully smaller and many many years in between.

Son has calcifications in his kidneys but no stones, saw a nephrologist suggested taking Moon stone stopper, acidifies the urine to wash out the calcium. Used to be routine to do that with stone patients but some medications used for blood pressure control are adversely affected by urinary acidification, the above does not affect those meds. Whether to increase or decrease the ph of the urine depends on the type of stone you have, calcium increase the acid(drop the ph),uric acid decrease the acid(increase the ph). Hydration is very important.

I kind of do that too. My visit to Mayo was about 1987 or thereabout. Haven't really had much since. I did get KUB x-rays for a few years after that. Had a MRI around 4 years ago and there apparently is a small stone in one kidney, but it's firmly entrenched. I now have CKD so there's that.

I may have the only story that isn't totally brutal. New Year's day 5 years ago woke up pissing blood. Memory is a little rough but started getting stabbing lower back pains on the way to the walk in. Did a urine sample then they sent me to the urologist. They (scanned x-rayed? Can't recall) and gave me the news that I was having a baby. Must not have been too big but I don't think it was too small either but the pain subsided mostly after some days. Then actually pissing out wasn't too bad I was half asleep and forgot to use the screen. I believe I did a follow-up to verify it was all gone. So I survived. I remember I drank a ton of water. Once you get one you're more likely to get another but I think I was living pretty dehydrated at the time. So hope it goes easy for the OP

I have had 14 so far. Doctor says I am a stone former. I take potassium citrate twice a day to elimonate them.

I haven't had one now since 2016 when they had to go in and take out 6 out of the left kidney. When asked what I was doing to prevent them, I replied " I was going to find someone I didn't like and give them my left kidney".

I’ve had stones over the last 30 years, just had the annual ultrasound and stone free for now. The urologist told me to drink lots of water and not let pee get yellow. Works so far, good luck.

Don't they use lithotripsy anymore?
