Do any of you have favorite routines with kettlebells to prepare for hunting? I have started using them for general fitness, but am interested in finding movements that specifically target the muscles needed for hiking with a heavy load.

Using the forum search, I found this thread, and will try some of the suggested workouts.

If you like something that's not listed, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Those workouts look really good. I always feel like overhead lunges are productive. Having to stabilize the weight from your core seems to be relatable to managing a heavy pack. KB snatches could strengthen you up for pulling a bow back and help you avoid injury when shouldering a heavy pack.

Box step ups with them in each hand
Goblet squats
Turkish get ups

Best thing for hunt prep would be to throw them in your pack and go hiking!

I agree with these and would add farmer carries for grip strength, weighted pull ups with KB hooked on toes.

i just do swings to beef up core strength.

and not much is so perfect as backpack ballast..a kettle bell wont tear up you pack. kinda compact tho.

stepping up on a box, i dont hold kettlebells. i wear a loaded pack. about 40. 18" box.

Thanks guys. I'm not a gym person, will have to look up what some of those are. I like the idea of putting them in my pack, but it's a long drive to the mountains for me.

I think kettle bells are phenomenal for mountain hunting. I've cut my lifting sessions down to twice a week and between these workouts I do basically cardio with kettle bells and some stair work. Any exercise that requires you to stabilize weight while moving will benefit your hiking/hunting. Specifically slingshots, anything overhead, squats, lunges, windmills (be careful with these) and turkish get ups to name a few. Turkish get ups are fun to make fun of but they are ridiculously taxing for me. I combine a lot of these exercises in two 6 to 12 minute routines and by the time I'm done my heart is pounding out of my chest. Good luck.
