I have a pair to be here this week. I picked up a big can of obenaufs. I've read here that I need not use it as it will mess up the boot

Do I need to get more of the kenetrek brand that is pose to come with the boots? I don't wanna ruin the boots so input please fellas

If y'all think I need to not use obenaufs and get kenetrek. Would anyone be wiling to trade can for a can or buy a can and mail to me and I'll send you what I have

Thanks y'all

I have used the obenaufs xp for years on my kenetreks and have had no issues at all.

I've used Obenauf's as well and it's one of the finest greases available. That said, I still can make little sense out of using greases and waxes on my GoreTex boots. Zamberlan recommends a product called HydroBloc which comes in a toothpaste-sized tube and is more of a cream. I used it on my boots prior to a trip to AK last month. I ran into some very heavy weather and my boots were exposed to constant wetness for 6 days, but the HydroBloc was great at keeping the outer leather dry. I loved how easily it applied and left no sticky or smeary feel on the boots. I'm thinking this might be the best waterproofing (or more accurately 'water-repelling') treatment I've ever used.

I think what Kenetrek is referring to is that if you use some other type of waterproofing treatment, it will cause the rand (the rubber strip that runs around the boot) to separate from the leather. For some reason, it causes the rubber to come away from the leather leaving gaps where water can get in.
I would think that Kenetrek (look at their website for the products and descriptions) would sell what is best for their boots because they want customers to be satisfied with their boots and not complaining about them falling apart. If I spent 4 to 500 dollars for a pair of boots, I certainly would make the effort to use the product the manufacturer recommends for the best service of that product. $18.00 is a cheap price to pay to get the right product, and I would not use anything else. Just my .02

Pretty much my thoughts sir.

Anyone want to work a deal with me on the obenaufs can I have. New never opened

When I bought My Mtn Extremes about 4 years ago they recommended Montana Pitch Blend for waterproofing and warned use of any other treatment would may void the warranty.

I"ve always used pitch blend on the Extremes and Obenaufs on my other boots, I actually like the pitch blend better as it seems to last longer on the boot.

I used the pitch blend this year and I think it works better than anything else I have tried - obenhaufs, nikwax, Mcnetts revive ex - but both of my rands on my Tibets are already separating after one 11 day hunt with about 70 miles. Lots of dead fall snagging my boots during that time probably contributed to that though.

I think I will try hydrobloc next to see how I like it compared to the Montana Pitch Blend and sooner or later will settle on one over the other(s).

I use Obenhaufs on my Kenetreks. Two years on them and no issues. Seems like OK stuff to me. I think there's a lot of debate on whether certain treatments clog up the pores and ruin the breathability. No idea how each brand of treatment compares in that regard.

Kenetrek's own branded boot treatment looks amazingly similar to Obenauf's. I'm sure there is some minor difference but I bet it's pretty subtle.

Hydrobloc sounds interesting.

Obenauf LP use here as well. Been using it for years.
That said I'd like to find a blend with a little more bee's wax... or pitch.

This probably wouldn't be too difficult. I make my own bow string wax by melting beeswax and adding a little Pitch Blend. You could probably melt some beeswax and just add it to warm Obenauf's and mix it up. Obenaufs melts at such a low temp you might not have to heat it.

Called kenetrek talked to a nice lady. Said not to use obenaufs it would void the shoes. So I just ordered theirs

Yeah, you gotta ignore the "voids the warranty" rhetoric.
Just their way of selling their brand, same ingredients in all the best stuff.

LostArra, yeah I'm sure your right. I'll do that.
Might try two blends, one w/ more bee's wax & another with pitch, and see which I like better.
