Keep your head on a swivel

Funny that neither attempt by AI can figure out the lack of a shadow on the note card. And strange how it put the light sections in the ink randomly in an odd attempt to mimic pen pressure difference of a human.
Soon AI will probably be good enough to figure that out.

Always, ALWAYS ask the seller for a wedding photo or photo of seller with his girlfriend. Once received ask for nude photo of wife/girlfriend. Two factor ID or no sale.

But what if the seller sends photos.
Now you have a can of worms, and probably should make arrangements to pay for the item.

It absolutely does all of that now, the user must specify everything.

Like please adjust shading and pen pressure for a realistic image.
Add a smudge in the ink at the second B, and please add a smear on the corner of the paper …….

If I'm spending big money I send the seller my number and ask them to call me when they have the item in hand. During our conversation I will ask where they are... in the house, shop, car...etc. so far they've always been in the house or garage.

Once I have that much information, I will ask for a picture of the item with items in the picture that should reside in the location described....if in the garage, please place the scope (for example) on a quart of oil on it's side with the objective lens to the bottom of the oil jug. Please add a rag and or a hammer in the pic. In the house I might ask for a pic on a plate with 3 forks and a can of soup in the picture.

I ask for this to be texted to me as we chat. Not many people can use ai that fast as we speak without rattling a keyboard. I can hear them setting up the shot and I either get the pic (100% so far) or I'll pull the pin. Lastly ask for the mailing address. A quick run through googlefu or onx is usually enough to tie the phone number, address and name to a location and usually an occupation.

It's not foolproof, but it's as good as I've come up with.

That’s a lot of trouble that can be avoided with a FaceTime, Zoom, or other video call.

That's rather assuming that everyone is a tech nerd. I've never face timed in my life.

With no offense meant to you, I have simply chosen not to purchase items above my comfort threshold from people who “can’t figure out FaceTime.” My patience with people who can’t figure out video calls in the late 2020s is about like my patience with senior officers who “couldn’t type” in the early 2010s. These are basic means of communication in modern society.

AI lies so much. It is only going to get worse before it gets better

People always think I’m full of shit when I tell this story but I tested ChatGPT to give me the synopsis of a kind of obscure book I have read. It provided a synopsis that had absolutely nothing to do with the actual book. When I pushed back on it, it admitted it lied and apologized - see below. So…the question is, how many people, who do NOT know what the answer should be from ChatGPT, simply accept the answer without question?

We are screwed

Akin to dealing with a (smarter than we are) deceptive and manipulative satient being. Never heard of something like this and its spooky as hell.

This is just it. Its first move/answer was to deceive. Not to clarify what I wanted or to clarify what it was giving me, only after it answered as though it were true and I called it out did it “correct” itself. Insanity.

We are already so flipping dumb and easily manipulated that this thing will be able to wreak whatever havoc it is programmed to, or eventually decides it wants to do.

So I thought I would add a couple of pics from the originals. I simply asked to apply shading where needed. This is a very simple command ask and not much to it. Just to show how easy to deceive.

The sophistication of this AI stuff is only going get better and better as time moves on. Just be vigilant when buying or selling. Oh, by the way, this scope is for sale! :ROFLMAO:

There was a thread on another forum showing a fake Leupold. A guy posted the “tells” that Leupold said to look for. I said not to share…why make it easier for the cheaters to cheat…

If you believe that the scammers are learning something new from what I have posted then probably the safest thing to do is not purchase anything online. I am amateur hour. The scammers are way ahead of anything I have posted. My whole point is for making sure you do not let your guard down in the ever evolving list of new scams out there.

I bought a "fake" leupold at a local pawn shop. They told me it was fake. It looked good and was $30.....so I bought it. I called the serial number in to leupold and it was a genuine unit.

That might be awesome! But....
Makes you wonder if the serial number is real or from another real scope and simply put on the one you purchased when they made it. Scammers gonna scam.

They told me exactly what the piece was down to the reticle.....seems awful technically savvy for the knocker offers.

No mate, I’m saying if a company in a far-off land decides to tool up to steal a product and rip people off, market research is not out of bounds. Trust me, even in a legit competitive business we build algorithms to capture info from the zeitgeist.

I understand what you are saying but this is about people scamming other people out of money. While some far off company, China, can tool up and make fake products left and right, scammers here and now operate on their own self interest to make quick money. The majority of these crooks are not tied to some far off company making counterfeit products.
