I grew up in the Southeast(South Carolina), and have lived in Texas and New Mexico since then. I've learned to enjoy the good things each area has to offer. Other than no mountains/elk(the Ozarks aren't that far away), it sounds like an area I'd really enjoy.

Small town rural feel and with a Div I school which is great if you enjoy sports.

Sounds a lot like Clemson, which was an awesome place to go to school.

I am also moving to Kansas from Washington this summer and not really looking forward to it. I keep being told how awesome the whitetail hunting is but it doesn't compare to elk hunting.

You are correct, the hunting is completely different. However, there are still quite a few things to do if you get out and give them a try. Where are you moving to?

One other thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is the weather. I won't lie, summers can suck (although it has been really nice so far this year) and winters can have some polar fistings but overall, it is pretty nice more often than not.

I grew up in 100* heat w/ 95% humidity. I lived in Iraq for a year, and now I live in Las Cruces...I know hot . And I'm perfectly fine with cold weather. I hear there's actually 4 seasons there...something I've never really witnessed. Oh, and if we end up there, the rondy sounds great to me.

My brother moved to Topeka, KS a little over a year ago.

He loves the place and the people.

Like mentioned, if you enjoy 4 seasons, you will get it there.

My brother has 40 acres of rolling fields and timber.

It's amazing the size of the whitetails he has cruising through his place in Nov--I will be bow hunting there this fall!

Uh oh.... An Aggie teaching at K state!? I went to Auburn (the real tigers ) for Undergrad and Grad school. My major prof was an Aggie and my judging coach a Wildcat.... Neither would let you forget it.

If you're looking for a good Animal Science program for her to teach and some outstanding hunting and fishing for you I would have her look into WSU in Pullman.

Washington seems to be a lot like Oregon...turning into the next Californias. But the PNW is another area that I'd probably move to without much complaining too. What did you get your degrees in?

I am headed to Leavenworth for the time being. Hopefully, if all the chips fall into place I can retire in 18-24 months and either move back to Washington or to Colorado.

I am interested in the Rondy, that sounds like a good time.

I am told that quite a bit as Leavenworth is more known for the prison than anything else. I however will only be driving by said prison on my way to work.

"The" prison?!?! Man, you are in for a treat. I believe there are 4 prisons. You have the federal one, the military one, a state women's one I believe and I think another one too.

As 69 ChrisCraft pointed out, Kansas isn't a mountain state (apparently geography wasn't a strong suit of the CA educational system). Given that, Manhattan is a beautiful area, you'll enjoy the Flint Hills. Been here (south of KC) 25 years now, and most Kansans are good folks. But, like everywhere, it's mostly up to you. Great whitetail, plenty of fishing and waterfowl. You'll need to go a bit further west in KS for decent pheasants in my opinion. Or do what I do, head to South Dakota for roosters, it's an easy 6-8 hours. 7 hours puts you in the mountains of Colorado.
