My friend from the Marines said I could come down and hunt his family's farm in Kansas. I'm in Michigan. Does it take preference points to get drawn? I'll be in zone 16/17 if that matters. Thinking it'll be gun season too just because of my schedule. Is there a good chance I can apply this April and get a tag or should I just be prepared for 2027? Thanks!

I've heard that the muzzleloader is the only season where draw odds are pretty good without a preference point. Just word of mouth however.

EDIT: I have been proven incorrect. I apologize for spreading misinformation. Good luck!

I know several guys that have put in with zero points anf got drawn in back to back years, different zone. and i know a guy that ahs two points and didn't get drawn. I'd say It wont hurt to put it, if you don't get drawn you will get a PP and should be good in year two.

Kansas doesn’t have separate quotas based on weapon. There is simply one quota for each unit and NR’s select their preferred weapon. Because of season dates the biologists and commission have always been of the opinion demand for each weapon sort of regulates itself in a reasonable way.

Despite what some folks say Kansas is a true preference point state and none of the units are currently filling up with one point apps yet. It’s getting closer for some, but still plenty of zero point folks being drawn. Make sure to fill out all four choices with the primary unit you intend to hunt in each of the four combinations.

So my friend said his family farm land is in zone 16 and zone 17. From what I understand you can hunt two zones if they are touching? So in essence I suppose I would make first choice the bigger quota unit and second choice the other one?

Yes, you draw a primary unit and one adjacent unit that is specified in each choice. I would ask him which unit contains the best ground. If it’s 17, for example, your choices could look like: 1) Unit 17, attach 16. 2) Unit 16, attach 17 3) Unit 2, attach 17 4) Unit 18, attach 17

The reason that’s important is as units begin to fill up there is a point in the draw where you could be drawn and 16/17 are unavailable but you can backdoor your way in to one of them by drawing a less desirable primary unit and attaching one of the units that you actually want to hunt. All four choices are weighed before moving on to the next app in Kansas’ system.

Thank you! That's the kind of info I am looking for. I appreciate it.

Kansas odds are the same for any season for NR. It is all the same quota.

Sure glad I bought an Illinois LL in 2006 before they stopped offering them. After the legislation liberalized their lottery I dumped my Kansas points and exited the system. Ended up moving over the border into Indiana 2019 to escape the IL taxes but took the LL with me! Now I just hunt IL on two $26 buck tags/year. No need to deal with this Kansas fiasco any longer.

Why is it a fiasco? It’s just a draw system, as a non resident of Kansas, I like it.

I expect you are not old enough to remember Kansas used to have a legitimate conservative NR lottery system like Iowa? One that kept the pressure down. Then a lame duck legislator sponsored the bill that liberalized the system to benefit the outfitting business he ran in retirement. 😂 What a guy! Can’t remember but maybe around 2010. Illinois did the same thing and went from a NR quota of 11k to basically OTC/22k. The Big Three used to be IA/KS/IL. I used to hunt all three. Now it’s just Iowa. Last man standing. I actually joined the Iowa BH Association. Because I admired their hard work to beat down greased politicians. Ravin has three lobbyists every year trying to kick the door down, plus several other special interest groups. But IBA is still holding down the fort.

I prefer educated DNR professionals managing deer herds conservatively over greased politicians. Sadly, their hands are mostly tied behind their backs. These days the only thing they are allowed to manage are squirrels & rabbits.
