I happened to be in the British Mountains today and took a (visual) peak over to border to see what the Eastern Brooks is currently like. I ended up about a mile from the border in the headwaters of the Firth and Malcome drainages and a stones throw from the eastern Kongakut drainages. Some of you guys might be there in another week or so.
Here is what it looked like at 2900 ft:
Note the number of mosquitoes viciously attacking the poor little guy! The bugs were still pretty bad everywhere I stopped. They should be tapering off shorty, but at least right now there are still plenty to go around.
Temps at that altitude were in the upper 40's. Estimated the freezing level was between 5-6000 ft.
If we don't get hit again, it should mostly be gone by the time you all get there, but it sure wasn't melting very fast.
As a side note, I also located the Porcupine Caribou herd about 60 miles inside Canada and traveling east.
Good luck to the sheep and caribou guys headed to that country.
