I have the chance to buy an older pair of Nikon 8x40 binoculars at a pretty good price. I was just wondering how the glass in the older ones was? These would primarily be for my kids but I will be using them for bowhunting as well. Any input would be appreciated.

I love my 8x36 ATB Monarchs (made in Japan) for archery. No complaints over many years.

Not worth the risk. Lower to mid-range bino performance has improved dramatically within the past few years. Just give an idea of budget and folks here can help.

I can get them for $100 so maybe worth it? Any other suggestions for cheap binos my kids can use?

Original Monarchs are not worth $100 IMO. Good Kid's binoculars are Leupold Yosemites, and Bushnell Legends (original) on the used market. The Yosemites are remarkably good for a $100 bin. Vortex Crossfire and Nikon Pro Staff are also worth a look

My Nikon HGs from 2005 are still fantastic compared to Vortex Viper HD.
I prefer older Japanese glass over most current Chinese.
YMMV
