Its hard to try on back country hunting boots when you live in South Alabama.

I have my eyes on a few different ones. I went back and forth on boots for years before settling in on the slip on Irish Setter types; down here snakes are a 365 day a year thing, and I love tucking my pants into my boots (no gaiters needed when you wear 16" boots). I also have the non-snake 10" versions of the same boot; would I be out of my mind considering those? I really like slip on boots...but I'm guessing that the free room in them is bad news bears for blisters. I typically walk 2-3 miles a day when hunting down here and don't have an issue, but any more than that I don't have any experience with (in these boots anyway).

I also learned that insulated boots are the bane of my existence, because my feet WILL sweat when I walk, and then freeze in the stand. Hoping merino wool socks help with this (I've never had any until now), though I feel the consistently lower temps I'll experience in Colorado during 2nd rifle vs hunting down here may warrant some light insulation?

Basically I have no idea where to start. Eyeing these:

Slip on boots will not work.

Do you have an REI nearby or other outdoor store with Hiking boots? You can always order a bunch off amazon and return the ones you don't like.

You are right, that extra room would be the end of you on the mountain. You would get blisters like crazy and it could be dangerous it could cause a fall. I was in the same boat in Michigan. Not much mountain walking here. I finally bought kenetrek and live them. Top notch customer service too. They worked for me but not for everyone. One thing i will warn you about. Be ready to spend some money. No matter which ones you get, good mountain hunting bboots are expensive.

Closest REI or Cabelas to me is just over 3 hours. Don't have jack down here except Academy and a Bass Pro a couple hours away.

Black Ovis has a Rokslide discount and a 30 day return policy on boots as long as you don't wear them outside. With the limited amount of time you have between now and hunting season I would order 3 or 4 pairs of boots from them, wear each one around the house for a few hours to see how they feel, and return the ones you don't want to keep. Then you'll have enough time to wear your boots around town before hunting season to break your boots in.

Yikes, cutting it close. Spend the money on good boots and stay away from danner made in China. If you're on a budget look at the danner combat hiker on eBay. Solid boot in the mountains and pretty cheap. They're the same boot as the crater rim. Goretex and uninsulated. Any solid mountain boot is all leather and would require at least 50 miles to break in. UnInsulated in 2nd rifle I would look at a nice thick merino wool sock. First lites cold weather socks are my favorite as I run uninsulated during rifle as well.

Yep, now fancying some Crispis. Of course they don't have the Idahos in my size on Black Ovis. Dangit.

Order you some Meindl Perfekt Hikers from Cabelas. I’m on my second pair. I am a neighbor in Mississippi and ordered my first pair in 2006 for a hunt in Utah. I wear them year round now and am about to order my third pair. My current boots were purchased in 2013 and served me well last fall again in Utah. I’m still wearing the pair bought in 2006 to cut the grass. Great support, cork insoles, all leather and true to size. About $270.

Is there still a pair in the classifieds? Haha, they’re my size (12), but I don’t need them.

My dad is coming out to camp fourth season and he’s in the same boat, no stores nearby. I told him to use amazon with items that say, free shipping and free returns.

Really got my heart set on Crispi Idaho’s...gonna call Black Ovis tomorrow. I can put them on order with campsaver but it says estimated shipping 21-30 days...

What EXACTLY do you need?

Backcountry boots?

Boots to hunt two-three miles per day slip hunting/in and out to blinds/treestands hunting whitetails and hogs and turkey in Alabama?

You like slip on boots. Want to tuck your pants into your boots. Have snakes. Hike two to three miles per day doing what you do. I’d looked at Russell.

You don’t need a mountaineering boot. You need a SE hunting boot. There is a difference.

I’m sure there are others.

You’ll need a second pair for CO. Different boot as i believe it’s different country, topography, climate, loads, weather, etc.

You’ve come to the right place. Keep asking questions and describe your needs.

We’ll help.

Yeah I’m looking for boots solely for hunting out west. I’ll continue to use my Irish Setters in the South East (well I say that; got a feeling if I get high quality boots for Colorado they may get some miles at home too).

I still would prefer a taller bolt; I’m entertaining Wyomings, but would rather have Guides or Idaho’s in the crispi line. I don’t want to be scared of crossing shallow water. Here I’m used to being able to go in water 14+ inches deep, and frequently do. I can see myself ruining a day of my hunt because my boots are full of water in CO.

I also have very hot feet; and seeing as how we’ll be doing a lot of hiking, I see no need for insulation.

I do not have weak ankles, but I also have ankles that have never been to Colorado.

I’m in the same boat as you and I’ll likely order 2-3 pairs from somewhere and return the 2 I don’t want to use because I’m in your same situation.

Well I walked around the house last night in my 11.5EE tall irish setters I wore all of the last two seasons, and some in my 12EE shorter irish setters, and decided to gamble on the 11.5EE Idaho's that campsaver had. If I sense for a second that they are too tight I'll send them back and start over. I kept looking at boots all night and just thought that the Idaho's checked all my boxes.

Good luck, I hope that works out! I'm assuming you have looked at the Kennetrek Mountain Extreme Uninsulated boots? They are also a 10" boot that is 100% leather.

Yeah, the $100 price difference between the Idaho's and those and the Guide's swung the pendulum to the Idaho's.
