Is this how we ultimately are able to manage the feral burros?

They need to allow horse slaughter in the United States again to help mitigate some of these problems. Not only for these burros but horses too. Shipping all the unwanted animals to Mexico is cruel and unnecessary.

I wonder why they tasted poor. Maybe Mom's cooking was not the best. An acquaintance of mine ate horse overseas several times and said it tasted fine, much like beef/venison. (Maybe it is a cultural thing: can't shoot a zebra because they live in a zoo in the USA, yet people go to Africa to hunt them. Can't eat a horse because it is a pet in the USA, yet people in foreign country eat them regularly.)
I would be willing to try cooking one a few different ways. At the bare minimum, BBQ sauce or curry can help a disagreeable meat flavor.

My Mom knew how to cook wild game. We used to eat venison, elk, waterfowl, upland game and home caught fish all year. I was pretty young (less than 12) when they shot them so I didn't go. But I still remember that no one liked the burro meat.

I don't see how a study will help. Everyone knows what the problem is. Unless congress repeals or changes the Wild and Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 nothing will change. They are regulated by the feds.

The act itself isn’t the biggest issue. If BLM managed herd levels to the established AMLs set in the act, most of the problem would go away. Lack of funds and special interest groups getting in the way are the biggest barriers. Arizona’s burro count is 6x greater than the AML! NV’s horse count is 3x greater than the AML and that number doesn’t even include the 4,000+ horses in the Virginia range bu Reno which are classified as “feral” and not included in the count since the NV department of agriculture is the agency responsible for managing (aka doing nothing) those horses.

Granted, due to the act there’s not a feasible outlet (adoption isn’t enough) to get rid of the 1,000s of horses and burros if the excess over the AML were somehow removed from the range.

This was done six years ago. Worth sharing again once it’s well done and they picked a liberal hippy looking dude for the main character to get non-hunters on board.

Has anyone eaten one? How does it taste? What is it similar to? I imagine it's a lean meat.

There was a scandal in Europe a few years ago because someone substituted horse meat into “beef lasagna.” No one noticed a difference in taste, but everyone was outraged because of our cultural sensitivity to eating horseflesh. That and the false advertising bit…
