Is the 300 WSM Dead?

It may not be dead, but it may be dead to me once my 7SAUM barrel is complete. I’ve killed a lot of western game with it, but it just can’t keep up with the 7mm 180 ELDM and fit in a SA magazine.

Mines not dead or dying. I just had mine built a couple years ago to model off Ryans pug rifle and I love it. I do reload so that helps. But, nothing like flinging 200 grain bullets down range in a short, not a ton recoil.

How short of a barrel? I have an early 2000’s win 70 coyote in 300WSM thats been collecting dust for 20 years. I was thinking about cutting it to 18”… I was thinking of 16” but I don’t think I have a can that is rated for that short.

20” with a suppressor. I’m getting 2740 fps with H4350. I know I can go hotter by why when I have a rifle that is capable out to 850.

No it’s not dead. It will never be as popular for factory ammo as the 300WM and maybe even the 300PRC but Lapua would not have added it to their product line if the support wasn’t there.

You also always have the option of having custom ammo loaded if you don’t want to reload or can’t find the factory offering you are looking for.

I recently purchased a T3X Roughtech Ember stainless in 300WSM.

It's not likely to have a big resurgence anytime soonw, but it's certainly established a well earned following. I had 4 through the year and took a pile of game with both them and various other 30 cal mags.

My brother has a 300 WSM as his one and only big game rifle. Has taken everything from big horns and prong horns to moose and elk with it. He has no plans to change. We've both noticed that 300 WSM ammo is getting both more rare and more expensive, comparatively.

If I were to build another 300 WSM, it'd be on a Tikka or other long/medium action, twisted 1:9 and throated for high BC bullets.

since lapua is now offering brass even in canada it is far from being dead for sure.

I’ve been regularly finding Winchester 150 gr factory ammo and actually picked up a few boxes of Federsl loaded 200 gr eldx. With Lapua brass on the market, makes me even happier to reload for my 300 WSM.

I have no experience with bench, large volume shooting or long range hunting. From a traditional hunting perspective 300 wsm is as good as ever.

Ammo availability and prices are decent again. It’s been cyclic and on an uptick. Norma, win, rem, hornady, federal, Nosler all have one or more bullet weight and types available on Midway right now. Some brass too. Cabelas just had Cci 250s for a bit.

This thread started when things weren’t good.

I nearly got out, glad I didn’t. Got into reloading and grabbed components as they were available at elevated pricing even. Now, we don’t have to be so desperate. Just vigil. Saved a ton not switching up on a little used, for me, big gun category in the safe and found my gun is way more accurate than I thought.

Now 300 wsm for the tough 180s and 168 coppers. 308 win for the cnc 150s and below, maybe light coppers in case my state goes that way for deer. It loves 165 interlocks too. Can weather any future storm having banked these staples.

I just read this entire thread start to finish. It seriously has me reconsidering selling my model 70 Super Shadow in 300wsm. The new cartridges are appealing but it is a very capable rifle.

Hopefully not dying… i started reloading just because we didn’t have any 300 wsm on the shelf anywhere here in CA. I’m getting it really dialed in now. It shoots 200 eldx, 208 eldms, and 200 DRTs. Really well. It will also shoot Barnes TTSX 180s very good as well.

Sticking with the DRT per CA rules. Shot it out to 320 at the local range (that’s the farthest range) and it shot awesome.

Pretty happy I got into reloading now. It’s not a cheap hobby. But it sure is fun when you get the hang of it and bullets go where you want them to at will.

I owned one for a couple years and during that time had to order all my ammo online due to never finding a single box in a store.
However last week my one of my LGS looked like this, so I think 300wsm is over the hump and survived.

Tell sportsmans warehouse lol they are the worst. I’m guessing they don’t get any in because their days are numbered.
