Is it common for states to give a Commissioner’s tag to raise funds?

I noticed this in an article about corner crossing. Is it common a state does this? I’m not in the big tag game at all. Wouldn’t this strip some funds from the state and send them to a private org instead?

Right. But do private orgs (RMeF, etc) get to auction then and keep a % of the proceeds?

Yes.

That's pretty much how they have always been used. Auction or raffle.

Wyoming different in that they do the super tag, and it benefits Wyoming directly, but they still do at least a few other tags for orgs.

It depends.

Lots of times it easier for outside orgs to spend the money. They can target certain projects without the red tape.

Its all about relationships and what a different entity can legally do.
I'm sure government officials have regulations that a 3rd party isn't subject to. So it's a work around to get something done your not allowed to do. You give something your allowed to give. They magically choose to do the thing thing you weren't allowed to do.

This. Once the money raised hits a government account, it becomes challenging to spend the funds on real projects that make a difference. However, non-profit organizations that specifically target these projects can get things done easier, and typically cheaper, than the state. With most orgs, those funds also stay visible so people donating can see what their money is spent on.

Understood. But the rest of license/ tag money goes right back to fish and game and it has seemed to work for a long time. What’s so special about money from the governer’s tag?

You understand how much they go for? 40K+ in the hands of a non-profit org with volunteer labor can do a hell of a lot with that amount. If that same 40K went to the government budget, over half would be spent on labor alone.

In Wyoming the Governor office issues tags to seven different districts across the state. The tags are mostly used for non-profit conservation orientated groups, I think they gave out 75 of these tags last year. Most are either raffled our auctioned off. There is a list of tags issues and the organization it was given to on the Wyoming site. Pretty interesting to see how they are distributed and to what organizations.
