Looking at New Mexico mule deer units that have Sept 1-24 archery seasons. Most have really low success rates and/or low draw odds. Public land Is a criteria. Backpacking Is a criteria. Glassing would be nice. Are there units where that early season tag worth it?

Yes, there are several good NM tags for the early season. The draw odds usually reflect it, so it’s not something to bank on. But if it happens you can have a great east hunt in some parts of the state.

In any unit that has decent draw odds u will be very likely eating tag soup. But hey a lota people will tell at least u get to be in the outdoors and enjoy the hunt. If u buy into that then by all means apply! Nmdgf will gladly accept ur 300$.

That's what I'm worried about.

I can scout quite a bit this spring and summer if it would help in a less desirable unit.

I put in for deer in the same units I put in for Elk. I figured it gives me more of a chance to draw and hunt the units I'm interested in. But I'm still new to hunting, so more field time is always better.
