I use the 168 TTSX, and it does not work well. Does not expand in Elk. Maybe too heavy ??
I need to try the lighter TTSX.

My Tikka loves them, so I continue to use them. I tried other brands, but they don't group as well.

I’d rather shoot a 1.5 MOA bullet that expands every time than. 0.25 MOA bullet that does not.

.308 and .270 will not kill an elk.

Just kidding of course. Pick either the .270 or .308 and enjoy the hunt!

308 win is a fine elk cartridge. Stay within the capability of the chosen bullets. We designed our 166g Hammer Hunter with the 308 in mind. With your distance of 400y our Sledge Hammer line would be great. At 400y bc is a non issue.

Here is the offside of a big cow elk I shot at 219 yards with a .308 165GR nosler accubond. The lungs were a soupy mess, and the arteries going into the heart were gone, pulled the heart out by hand with no cutting. Exit hole was a little smaller than a quarter. Yes, a .308 is good….!IMG_4493.jpeg

I have killed 5 elk with my 308 (and 8 deer). First three with 165gr Nosler partitions, and the last two with 168 Barnes TTSX. All elk have fallen within 100 yards, with most not making it more than 20-30 yards. I personally feel caliber is the least important (within legal caliber options), bullet choice is the 2nd most, but being able to shoot an animal accurately is the most important. Get a rifle you shoot well and shoot them in the sweet spot with a good bullet - they will go down. 308 is great, practice with your rifle, and keep shots within 400 yards.

6.5CM is plenty. Speed kills. Vortex even produced a video comparing the 6.5 to a .308.
6.5 Wins, no matter what the nay sayers say.

My son's first elk.
165gr SST
Ruger M77 with leupold 3-9×40
1st round thru the heart and lungs. The bull just rocked back a little bit and locked up. 2nd shot hit higher and back but dropped him in his tracks. He stood up, flipped over backwards and it was over. Didn't need the 2nd shot. But was going to keep shooting until he fell or was out of ammo

Of course the .308W will kill elk. My kids have killed multiple elk (from 60 yards to 300 yards with their 308s). And, they don't use any special bullets (all 150gr or 165gr Interlocks).
