Is 12'' borescope enough for gun maintenance?

Hi everybody,

I have and opportunity to get 12'' hawkeye borescope for cheap, but in doubt if it would be long enough and if i should save up for 17'' version. For what I read so far, most of wear and erosion happens in throat area, so theoretically 12'' inch should do.
What's your experience?

thanks,
Max

Never seen one, never used one, never needed one.

Unless you're actually competitive in BR matches & shoot many hundreds/thousands of rounds a year through a single rifle (and have spare barrels on hand...) I really don't see the practical use for one.

What caliber are you shooting? Unless it's anincredibly high pressure chambering or, as I say, being shot excessively, throat erosion really isn't much to worry about.

if it is cheap jump on it.

12inches will get the throat on a 300 win mag on a rem 700.

you will have no trouble selling it if you want to get the longer one or if you find you don't use it.

and do test it first!!! the mirrors can get messed up.

I'm shooting several calibers, including notorious barrel burner - 6 Creed. I don't compete yet, but do shot more that a 1-1.5k rounds for every rifle yearly.
Is examining throat enough to estimate overall barrel condition?
Do you guys also check bore for copper fouling? Or using borescope is overkill?

Here's a couple screenshots from mine, it's the crown, obviously you can see one was done right, the other.....appears it was performed with a pipe cutter. Amazingly that rifle still shoots sub 3/4" if I do my part. Barrels about to be sent off to get re-crowned.
