The newest iPhone update has unlocked the GPS in airplane mode. Now, I can use GAIA with minimal battery usage! It's pretty awesome for those of us using their iPhone as their GPS unit.

i've been looking at apps for the iphone recently and the GAIA one seems to be highly recommended and I like what I've seen on their site. I'll be upgrading next month to an iphone 6 and am looking forward to using it as my primary navigation tool this fall.

So far the non-geeks what is GAIA and what other GPS programs can we use hunting? Thanks

Gaia is just one of the apps that allows you to download maps prehunt, hike, bike whatever. Then you have sat, topo etc, without having to worry about cell service. I know Trimble is another, but I'm happy with Gaiamaps.

Can you walk me through this.... What do I need to do (if anything)? I have an iPhone 5. Love the idea of not having to bring a separate GPS.

8.3 also and mine doesnt work. Iphone 5s 64 gig. When I go into maps on airplane mode it tells me to turn it off. When I try to locate myself it tells me to turn off airplane mode also. So youll have to tell me how your doing that? Is it only on Iphone 6's that it works?

iPhone 5 and PDF maps. I used it on airplane mode last weekend to test. I did it specifically to test airplane made and mapping to see if it worked. I don't normally use my phone for a gps.

You go to the App Store and search Gaiamaps. It is not free, but well worth it. Once downloaded, open it and search for the place you want to map, say conejos, CO. Then it has a box you use to outline the area and that's the boundaries of the map you will download. Then I do the topo and satellite layers.

Yeah you can't do it on the Maps app that came with the phone because it requires realtime downloading. Where as the apps like Gaia allow you to download before hand.

Yeah, and you can get a lot of different options. You can download the google, ESRI, or Mapquest, which depending on your location may provide better or worse resolution (or different seasons for those dealing with deciduous forests). Plus there are overlays like CO GMUs, slope and public land. I download google terrain as well, which helps me visualize topo changes over larger areas.
