Lesson learned here. Bought a scope from a fellow slider. He only put $100 insurance on it. I paid $400. I got it and wasted $50 in ammo trying to sight it in. The scope just doesn't track. Seller claims it was fine for him. Trying to enter a claim online to the USPS is a major hassle. Their site plain stinks. After 45 minutes it was an epic failure. I called the manufacturer who is out of the scope business but they told me to send it anyway. So, insist on the right amount of insurance from sellers. I think it costs $1 per hundred.

That $100 is included for free from most carriers so seller didn't add anything. As a seller I add insurance to protect ME from having to refund, but normally paying for insurance I believe is usually on the buyer to ask/pay for. I sent off a box of Kuiu clothes to a RSer earlier this week with $900 on it and there's no turrets to track, paid for it because like I said I'm protecting myself against a headache if something happens.

Truth be told, I think had he purchased insurance, it would be highly unlikely for them to cover it. You could see a very easy scheme for people to try and make claims off of used parts sent through the mail that is then deemed broken."

Unless the package itself was damaged or lost, it's gonna be hard to prove that one even with the best insurance policy.

I only buy scopes with a transferable warranty, myself.

I also ALWAYS buy insurance because when I sent my NL Pures in for repair, the package was opened en route and the binos were taken from the package. Thankfully I insured it, but I had to write a threatening lawyer letter (thankfully I'm a lawyer so fees were cheap).

Know before you buy as some Brand Scopes that make scopes offer a lifetime warranty (no reciept needed) the only cost is S&H in and if they can't service they will offer up something close to what you sent in. I like Burris for that. But you have to be careful. Sounds like the Op bought what was hoped to be a "good" used scope only to learn it was not. I also have a tough time buying used just for this concern!
A few will be stand up sellers but not all are. (Just an observation)
Hope they can fix It!

My thought on this is that the seller takes responsibility, whether it was like that before or the shipper caused the damage. You paid for a functioning item and did not receive one.

I had an SWFA that I sold on here, when it got to the buyer it had a bent turret and significantly more dings. Not sure what happened there, but I just had him ship it back to me and refunded him fully. It only took me 2 years to get a replacement for it from SWFA

Shipping insurance would not cover that kind of alleged damage.
