maybe so on the old model. But I tested it on mine after I got. Didnt activate yet and was able to get to maps and compass worked great. No need to activate to get the maps to work.

Yeah I was just thinking with the delorme vs garmin confusion that might have been the case. Hmmm this might end up making it to my wish list after all, I'll see how I like it on the hunt.
