I have a Winchester Model 70 featherweight in 300 WM that I have been wanting to do some work on. As the products available for it are endless and I have never done anything like this before I was hoping to get some input from you gents about which direction I should go. I want to shave some weight off of it and I want it to become a shooter. The shooter part definitely takes preference over shaving weight but I do want to cut some weight. Here is what I have so far.

Action: lugs lapped, bolt face and action face squared up, trigger adjusted ( not sure if I should keep the factory trigger or go with an aftermarket)

Stock: Bell & Carlson Medalist Ultra-Light($248), McMillan Hunter's Edge Carbon Fiber Ultra-Light($662) or any other stock that you make recommend in a moderate price range.

Barrel: Pac-Nor super match, Krieger Match grade, Shilen select match, or proof research. If going with a SS barrel then I will have it fluted. Regardless of whether its the proof research or a SS barrel it will be getting a brake put on it. Also open to ideas beyond the above mentioned barrels.

Optics: pretty sure I will just keep the meopta I have on it for now and upgrade at a later time.

Also if anyone could recommend a good gunsmith in Utah or even someone to send it too. I was thinking about cross canyon arms here in Utah but don't really have much direction on anyone at this point.

Thanks

Joe

contact Bobby Hart at www.rwhart.com, that's where i would start. it's a no brainer for me cause they're local but i believe you could ship your gun to get work done. i had my 300 done there and it came out awesome!

I would highly recommend Nathan Daley with straightshotgunsmithing.com He does absolute awesome job and specializes in long range hunting rifles. He does work for people all over the us so he is busy.

Thanks Gents, I will look into those you mentioned. Was also taking a look at Kerry O'day with MG Arms. They make a 13oz kevlar stock and wanted to see if they could do it for a model 70.

I've been wanting to do much the same thing with a Model 70 action. I had a 300 WM built off of a Remington action, love the gun, but would like a controlled round feed. I'd like to hear how this turns out.

You might want to check Brown Precision for a stock. They make a Kevlar stock that is pretty light, and had a finish called Rhino hide. I have that on my rifle and really enjoy the extra grip it provides.

Talked to MG Arms, they will do a kevlar stock in my choice of color, length of pull, and bed the action/barrel for 690. Not to bad considering the McMilian is almost that cost with no work done and in a standard length of pull.
