Initial thoughts on the RokStok

I happen to be one of those who have embraced the “RokStok, Maven RS 1.2, UM rings, Tika action, smaller caliber hunting rifles” movement. With that being said, I bought a couple of RokStoks, and have moved my Tikka actions onto them. Prior to that the actions were on a Mesa Precision Arms Altitude stock and an XLR chassis. Here are my initial thoughts on that move over:

1. When I initially threw my 7 PRC action into one of the RokStoks, the rear action bolt would actually bind up the bolt. I ended up taking the bolt and grinding just a fraction of metal off the end so the bolt was not as long. Once I ground some of that off, it worked like a champ. This is also using the OEM bottom metal.
2. I started with UM low rings, and while they worked great on the two previous stocks, the rokstok, because of its negative comb, they are too low. While I could position my eye to get in the scope, I end up shouldering the rifle too high. Minimizing the recoil management effectiveness of the stock.
3. When I threw my 223 action in it, I had not zeroed it when I got to the range. I was confronted with the fact that it is not possible to naked eye bore site an action that is in a rokstok, while the bolt can come out, there’s no way to get behind the gun and actually look down the chamber. You either need to use a laser type bore site, or have bore sighted it prior to installing it in the rokstok

Experience:

I have only shot roughly 30 rounds through my 223 with it, and that was at the range on a concrete bench, so I don’t have a great set of experience yet with using it prone and in other positions. At this point in time I’m not sure I’m any more effective with it than I was the previous two stocks that I was using. I am scheduled for the June 9 Shoot2Hunt class, so after that class, I am hoping to be much more proficient with the stock/setup! And be exceptionally happy joining the RSS group …

Or after the class, I may sell all of my Tikka’s, Mavens, and my RokStoks, and buy X-Bolt in 300 PRC, throw it in an MDT chassis, and slap an MOA NF on it … time will tell!

Thank you for the insight. Mine should be shipping to me any day now. It is good to know that you cannot pull the bolt to bore sight it... that would have surprised me! I am running the factory stock at the moment and also have the low rings on my 223. I might need to order the medium rings for the 243 and drop that in the Rokstok.

Please also report back on the class. I was wanting to attend but too much changing with work this year. I hope to make the next one. I am sure I have 35+ years of bad habits I need to correct!

I dont have an actual rokstok but i did chop shop a stock i had to the same specs and the bore sight thing got me at the range aswell the other day

Mesa Altitude stocks use longer actions screws for their tikka stocks, they ship the stock with them. If you switched stocks, and didn’t switch back to your original factory action screws it will bind the bolt.

Easy fix would be to mount your scope and bore sight in the OEM stock. Sounds like a pain, but since the rokstock is not OEM, one would generally think you already have a scope mounted to the action before installing the new stock.

Re: Bore Sighting — Use a bigger piece of cardboard and start closer if you’re having difficulty getting relatively sighted in. That was my only change.

I had the privilege of shooting one of the first Rokstocks produced and I didn't love it. That being said that was with a rifle that had low rings. I have a long neck and for me it was uncomfortable. I tried another later with high rings and that seemed to help quite a bit but the platform still seemed a bit small for liking.

It's definitely different. I figured that 13.5" LOP would be longer than ideal, being only 5'5". Instead it's a tad short as is, and swapping to a 1" thick limbsaver pad seems about right.

It's WAY easier to sport hits than a standard Tikka stock.
