I happen to be one of those who have embraced the “RokStok, Maven RS 1.2, UM rings, Tika action, smaller caliber hunting rifles” movement. With that being said, I bought a couple of RokStoks, and have moved my Tikka actions onto them. Prior to that the actions were on a Mesa Precision Arms Altitude stock and an XLR chassis. Here are my initial thoughts on that move over:
1. When I initially threw my 7 PRC action into one of the RokStoks, the rear action bolt would actually bind up the bolt. I ended up taking the bolt and grinding just a fraction of metal off the end so the bolt was not as long. Once I ground some of that off, it worked like a champ. This is also using the OEM bottom metal.
2. I started with UM low rings, and while they worked great on the two previous stocks, the rokstok, because of its negative comb, they are too low. While I could position my eye to get in the scope, I end up shouldering the rifle too high. Minimizing the recoil management effectiveness of the stock.
3. When I threw my 223 action in it, I had not zeroed it when I got to the range. I was confronted with the fact that it is not possible to naked eye bore site an action that is in a rokstok, while the bolt can come out, there’s no way to get behind the gun and actually look down the chamber. You either need to use a laser type bore site, or have bore sighted it prior to installing it in the rokstok
Experience:
I have only shot roughly 30 rounds through my 223 with it, and that was at the range on a concrete bench, so I don’t have a great set of experience yet with using it prone and in other positions. At this point in time I’m not sure I’m any more effective with it than I was the previous two stocks that I was using. I am scheduled for the June 9 Shoot2Hunt class, so after that class, I am hoping to be much more proficient with the stock/setup! And be exceptionally happy joining the RSS group …
Or after the class, I may sell all of my Tikka’s, Mavens, and my RokStoks, and buy X-Bolt in 300 PRC, throw it in an MDT chassis, and slap an MOA NF on it … time will tell!
