I just got back from an unforgettable trip with SAW Outfitters in Idaho, and I can’t say enough good things about the experience. My buddy and I both tagged out by Day 4 after an incredible week of hard hunting, great food, and nonstop elk action.

From the moment we saddled up, I knew we were in good hands. The horses were well-mannered and steady, which made the long ride into camp comfortable and actually pretty enjoyable. Camp itself was well set up — nice tents, warm stoves, and great meals every day. You could tell the crew puts real care into making sure hunters are comfortable after long days in the field.

We saw elk every single day, and the hunting pressure was really low, which made a big difference. The guides at SAW are top-notch — knowledgeable, experienced, and able to adapt to your hunting style and ability. My friend and I hit it hard, covering plenty of ground, and the guides matched our effort the whole way.

By the end of Day 4, we both had our bulls down. Couldn’t have asked for a better outcome or a better outfitter.

If you’re looking for a true backcountry Idaho hunt — with experienced guides, solid horses, good food, and real opportunity — I’d highly recommend SAW Outfitters. This trip was the real deal.

Yes but outfitters in ID get allocated tags so not really.

Well, they do but there are the general tags that outfitters are allocated and then there is an outfitters set aside in the controlled hunt draws. Which was this? Did you apply in May or buy it straight from the outfitter?

Outfitter applies for you, I filled out my information in January

How were the elk numbers? Do you think a flat lander would have trouble traversing the terrain? Thinking about booking for 2027.

Written as if written by the owners themselves lol. Congrats. You do the fully guided, 1x1, 2x1 or drop camp? Rifle or Archery?

Did you use bow or rifle on this hunt? Still bugling/rut action when you went?
Pretty sure he did rifle and guided...so his experience probably cost over $9k. I hate that trophies and shit opportunity comes down to how deep your pockets are. Still trying to potentially do a drop camp next time I go out. Idk, maybe semi guided. Though I'm not sure the difference between drop camp and semi guided. Think it's the same thing.

I have seen some “semi-guided” where a staff member of the outfitter stays in camp to assist with cooking and firewood, gives daily recommendation on where to go/what to do, but doesn’t go with you to hunt.

Drop camp is you get dropped off and you don’t communicate with outfitter or staff until they come back on pickup day, unless you kill an animal and send them an Inreach message to come help pack out.

Yea most outdoors shows you see except, for example the hunting public, etc., need content to continue being a show or channel, in order for that, they need success to keep viewers and subscribers engaged. As a result, viewers want to replicate what they see...they may try a diy..realize it's hard ...really hard to simply study maps, hop in forums, call rangers offices, and get on game and find success in a land they are unfamiliar with in the course of a week....so there is a market for success...you can have success or a higher rate if you pay for it. Big game hunting becomes a rich man's hunting for non residents...unless you still are willing to drop camp or go semi guided. But hey at least you can support small business owners!
