I am getting inconsistent neck tension on lapua brass when seating after I mandrel and chamfer. Anyone else have this issue? Doesn’t happen with 6.5 lapua brass for me.

So, you feel the inconsistency or you measuring the inconsistency? What is sized case neck size no bullet vs bullet? OD

Virgin Lapua annealed necks are very abrasive. You can feel the difference between the body and the neck just how rough it is.

The way I combat this is to mandrel it with imperial case wax in the neck. Iv tried a few other lubricants but they just don’t seem to work well.

After using a mandrel with imperial I dry tumble the lube off for a few hours, this also knocks down a lot of that abrasive feeling on the brass.

After that I’d bet you have nice smooth seating.

I fought this problem for a while before figuring it out, treating the initial firing almost as a sacrificial firing because of it. After doing above I have no issues with using virgin brass for anything.

I just had a similar issue with lapua LRP brass. I Chamfer and debur the new brass, run it through a 21st century expander mandrel prior to loading. Had to seriously adjust (about 10 thou) my Forrester seating die to get my preferred seating depth.

I don’t get it because the expander mandrel seemed to expand the necks an adequate amount. I haven’t had this issue with any new hornady brass.

Glad it’s not just me.
