Mav, the flip locks aren't that bad on the "new" slik 624/634. They seem pretty solid and look like you could adjust them in the field if an accident occurred. Not sure how you'd adjust the twist locks in the field if something ever happened to them. I'd call it a small improvement with minimal weight increase. Imho, of course.

The issue I have histrically had with flick locks is they hang up on things when putting in or taking the tripod out of the pack. I guess this could conceivably increase the potential for breakage. This is not an issue with the twist locks.

You have to experience the Slik SH-707E to appreciate what a good value it is. It beats most fluid heads for glassing game. Using the handle, I lock the head with the scope pointed to the right edge of the area I'm glassing. Then I release the pan lock and use the bridge of my nose to push the scope eyepiece as I pan left. I keep my hands in my lap until I reach the left edge. Then I move the scope back the right edge, raise or lower the field of view using the handle, and repeat. My hands don't touch the scope when I'm glassing. The only head I've seen that arguably pans better is the Jim White head, which has ball bearings but also costs 3X more.
