I'm trying it in my .284 Win since I can't find H4831. Seems to be doing okay, but with mono's it's hard to get enough powder in the case and keep my rounds under 3.00" to fit my Savage magazine. The loads are very compressed.

56 grains put three 150 GMX's into the same hole for me yesterday morning. It has potential. Speed is nothing to write home about but I don't ignore one-hole groups.

55 grains under 160 Speers produced 0.7's consistently.

Still experimenting with IMR 4166 for the 139 LRX's. Velocity is superb but the accuracy is lacking so far.
Wow, that seems hot for a 150 pill.

The oal for that load in my gun is 2.88 which putis it .053" from the jam point. Havent tried different seating depths yet because hunting season was upon me and I needed to call it good at that point.
That's about where OAL landed, 2.878.

That is 60 thousandths off the lands for me. With the cannular, I'd have to trim the necks short to get further from the lands. May play with that using some once fired hornady brass in the spring. I crimped my loads with a Lee FC die.

Light extractor marks but nothing significantly worse than the hornady factory loads.

Since you can't find many powders for the .284 Win in load data, I've been using .280 Rem load data - which unfortunately like the .284 Win, is notoriously underpowered due to some of the semi-auto rifles those two rounds were introduced in. .280 Rem load data works pretty well since all the load data is underpowered.

The max load listed by Hodgdon for .280 Rem using IMR 4955 and 150's is 55.5 grains. So 56 isn't that far over max for the (again, underpowered) .280 Rem.

One hole groups don't happen by accident. I was hoping for 2900 from a 150, but I'll take 0.4's at 2820 that I got from a 22" barrel. I can't hold a fixed 6x scope any better than that.

Ah, I missed that you were using a 284, we were discussing loads for the 6.5 PRC. I would think you could go quite a bit higher with a 7mm cartridge, but I only use the 7mm-08 in that size pill...

I know the discussion was about 6.5 but I thought I'd add a data point for IMR 4955 since there seems to be so little info about it.

I also load for 7mm-08 and am now using IMR 4166. It's a phenomenal powder for 7mm-08.

Good to know, don't have any of that yet. Just scored a solid haul of Ramshot powders and have a fair amount of faster powders already, but if an 8lbr shows up on a local shelf I'll have to grab it.

I havent been crimping at all on mine, I'm not sure how much difference it makes in a bolt action.

I wanted them to stay as consistent as possible since they are hunting loads, and the crimp should allow for higher initial pressure and hotter burn to hopefully be cleaner burning and a tad faster without going to a higher charge. I'm using Winchester magnum primers. Shot it in, will shoot a group to show after season.

Any recent updates on the 6.5prc and the 4955? I recently pick up some 143ELDX and 140 VLD’s.

I have had nothing but trouble with it. Tried in several guns and always had pressure problems. In one 300 win we had pressure 5 grains below minimum using hodgon data. I literally burned half a pound just to watch it.

Bringing this back up to the top.

Did a quick pressure test today with IMR 4955, 147gr eldm, WLR primers, and ADG brass in 6.5PRC. Loaded 1 round at each: 54, 54.5, 55, 55.5, 56.0, and 56.5. Everything was good through 55.5. Had slight ejector marks on both 56 and 56.5. No sticky bolt but I’ll stop there. Going to load 10 at 55.5 or 55.7 and shot a group. I’ll post more later.

We hit all the way up to 3015ish but settled around 2960 I believe. It’s my dads rifle. He will be taking it elk hunting next weekend.
