I started a post a while back about wanting to get into long range shooting and got some good feedback. I got a scope that I thought would be overkill for my current rifle. I was wrong.

I put a vortex viper on My Winchester model 70 in .270.

I was in the mountains and finally had a chance to set up and shoot beyond my normal distance of 200 yards. Using only the FPS on the ammunition box( I need to get a crono) I figured out some drops for set distances. I was shooting at a piece of scrap steel that was 18 inch wide by 30 tall. I had perfect 70 degree days with no detectable wind. All shots were taken with front and rear sand bags.

I started at 330 yards and dialed up the pre determined amount and was hitting steel like I expected. I was able to tell I was hitting lower than calculated. I only shot 4 times but hit tighter than I expected, probably about 1 MOA, maybe better.

Then I moved out to the next break and ranged 560. Again only about 4 shots before moving back to a clean 600 yards. I was comped about 9.75 MOA from my 200 yard zero. 4 shots that again were about 1MOA. I couldn't believe the rifle was hitting that well!

The following day I stretched it to 830 yards and again got 4 for 4 on the steel. I was getting short on time and wanted to see how far I could take it so I hopped back to the absolute furthest I could get and ranged 965. 4 shots and 4 misses later I hung it up and went back to the cabin. It is a surreal feeling being able to ring steel from that far away. I thought I needed to upgrade my rifle right away but now I'm content to see how good I can get this rifle to hit.

I just wanted to share and thank you guys for putting up so much good information!

Love breaking the rifle out and stretching things out!!! Just wait.... I started like you and now I can't stop. Reloading, new rifles, new calibers... It never ends!! Ton of fun!

If I recall there was a winner for King of 2 miles or some other competition than won with a factory pre64 model 70
Nevermind it was a local Utah match here is the video, its a gret rifle IMHO.
