First of all, congrats on the birth!

Also,......typically I dont really ask permission to go hunting....kinda just schedule it and go.....

Good luck and keep us posted!
The key to this is giving you SO plenty of warning, and also let her get her time off too.

Scheduling a weekend getaway (or two) usually helps with the "I'm going to be quite busy and gone a lot August - January".

I warned my wife in our vows that tax season is ten months and hunting season is eleven months....

This.

And from what I've noticed from my hunting partners who struggle to get permission for hunting, or are made to feel guilty when they do go, their SO's are the type that don't want their own time off or dont have hobbies or interests themselves. Choose wisely out there.

For guys that want to make themselves feel good by saying you shouldn't have to ask, cmon! It's called being a decent human. Now if my wife told me I could not go, I'd be pissed. That's your partner and in this specific situation it's not fair to just constantly bail and put all of the responsibility on your SO to do everything that needs to be done including keeping a 1mo old baby alive.

Source: I have a 1mo old baby and a 6yr old.

Congrats man! I will take far less trips this year but I'm just counting the days down until I get to take both boys with me every time. I'm most excited about taking my older son dove hunting on Saturday.

Shoot, my wife told me to get the heck out of the house and go hunting the same day we brought our first kiddo home. Of course, I put off going for two weeks of the hunt because it was close to the due date. Left at 4 in the morning and was back that evening with a nice fat cow elk. No hunts for the second kid but the third one was during the middle of archery elk. My wife was on semi bed rest. After her doc appointment I asked if everything was fine and she said “yep, get out of here.” I had my inreach and was only 2 hours away. She had her mom and sister within a 45 second drive from our house. Lol. I was back the next evening with a little 3x4 bull. Daughter was born two weeks later.

Babies usually take 9 months or so to get here, do some of you guys even look at a calendar?.........lol! Better planning allows you to look caring and supportive and still go hunting.

Look on the bright side here dude. The baby’s birthday will be in august. If it was in September, you would have F’d up long term. Don’t risk that with #2.

So for the record OP... look, we get it, most men need a kitchen pass, so don't let all this testosterone macho bull in here affect you. Congrats, having to go early this year because my buddy has a baby boy due Sept 22! He came with me last year and is addicted now. Birthdays for this new little man will be August 22nd!

Congrats on the new baby!

Both me and my wife will be gone on our daughters birthday 9/14. I’ll be in elk camp and she will be coaching her HS girls soccer team. We will just celebrate her birthday before we leave. As for the planning phase of having kids, we decided to take them when the good Lord provided them.

Have fun! With a 1 month old I’ll give you a pass for asking and getting permission. It’s the decent thing to do, and it makes her think she has a say in it. My wife is leaving her 7 month old with the grand parents to go elk hunting 4 days. Her friends think she’s crazy. Spoiler alert…she is!!!

Congrats on the newborn! Enjoy every moment

Ignore the jackass comments from the macho men on here, it’s called respect what you did and it goes a long ways. I did the same as you years ago for my annual rut trip

If elk hunting is more important than your child and your partners well being, you need to re evaluate your life.

All this big talk and bluster is comical. My wife has never said no, and I'll never stop asking. Our 4th is on the way and she still cheers me on every time I head west.

Congrats on the new addition! Western hunting is all about preparation, make smart Christmas choices! ;)
