Lightweight AR-10 like a Ruger SFAR or POF Revolution in 308 with iron sights!

I may try that Ruger, my other .308 is a heavy pig, but it gets it done too.

Yeah I had a traditional AR10 for hogs and sold it because it was just a tank and got tired of the weight. The SFAR or POF Rev/Rogue look like something I may pickup some day.

Actually, that happens to be my order of preference.

For a gun that will only see use in timber, it's hard to beat a Remington 7600 pump. That's what the vast majority of the North East old school trackers used.

A 1-6x scope and your good to go.

My buddy hunts WT in Pennsylvania in the thick timber mountains, and the entire group uses Remington pumps in .308.

Around here if you aren’t hunting the fields you won’t be able to get a shot passed 100 to save your life. Some areas to the north that could be knocked down to 50 yards max.

If I’m in the former area I’ll just keep using my normal caliber. But in the thick stuff I like my 458 socom.

Remington 7600, pick a caliber. Closer range, faster shooting with quick follow up are its specialty. Mine shoots just under an inch and points like an extension of my arm. There's a reason why so many eastern big woods buck hunters prefer them.

I don’t think you need big bullets or fast follow-up shots for this kind of application. Mulies are not hard to kill and my experience in western timber is more about being able to see the holes I can shoot through. I’d still be focused on a light bolt gun in 24-27 cal with a good scope on the lower magnification but higher light collection range. A 22 centerfire with good bullets would also do it fine if it’s legal in your state.

I’ve got a marlin 336 30-30 that was given to me as a hunters safety graduation gift from my grandpa when I was 8. I love that gun and it’s still in remarkably condition which is exactly why I’m not keen on packing it in 5 miles and hunting in unknown late October weather with it lol

20" tikka chambered in your favorite 308 family cartraige, flush fit factory mag so you can grip where it balances, maybe a comb riser or a stock with one, topped with an swfa 6mq.

Then once you put a few hundred rounds down the pipe at distance it will go from your timber gun to your do all gun.. at least that's my experience

I have an older savage 110 lightweight storm in 308* w/a 2.5-10x44. It is purposed exactly like you are describing. Shoots great, sub8lbs and very resilient to field abuse.

I dont know if its the ultimate best tool for the job, but around here its as traditional a “woods gun” as it gets. For sure they are not lightweights if thats what you want. Mines in 3006 with a 2.5-10x .

What I built for next year, 45-70 subsonic, can, 1-6. Zeroe, 2” low at 100, it will hold +/-2” to 100, quietish, 410g at 1000+ fps will do plenty of damage. Can even buy it as a factory load from Hornady.

I "needed" the same thing...the right tool for steep, monstrous mountainside with brush at least neck deep and usually the curves going the wrong way. And for fogged or snowed in days when the glassing points are socked in.
Tikka 6.5cm with a 18" barrel and suppressor and a 3x9 swfa was the simple and best answer for my use.
Id also not be ascared of a Kimber in cm trimmed to 18" or so
Kimber is obviously lighter.
On clear days I prefer to shoot em from over there ....when they show themselves.

Marlin (JM) ported GG .45/70 with a Leupld VX3 1.5x5 in game reaper mounts. Was my deer gun for a long time in the WV woods.
Have Remlin trapper in the same I got a few years ago Skinner peeps on it.
Haven't tried it out yet.

I just bought a kimber in 338 fed for this exact use. Can't wait to use it. I have long range rifles and havent shot an animal over 100 yards and outside the timber sense 2019. And now that I think about it I've only killed a handful of animals over 350 yards. Just doesn't happen much for me even with as much as I love shooting far.
