Oh, Kodiak, Alaska, maybe. It’s not hard to get to Afognak for Roosevelt Elk from Kodiak. Be careful not to become bear poop.
The above is said a little tongue in cheek.
My genuine answer: Northwest Wyoming, east of the Continental Divide, between the Montana border and South Pass. That’s my answer, now hear the rest of the story.
Unless you want to live in Casper or Riverton, my answer gives you about six small towns to consider: Powell, Cody, Meteetse, Thermopolis, Dubois, and Lander. These are not easy towns to establish yourself in. Obviously not impossible, because people have done it, but not easy.
Some people earn their fortune elsewhere and retire to one of these towns.
Or, some people go there as a footloose and fancy free youngster, work low paying jobs, have roommates to make rent, eventually marry a local gal, and, over years (perhaps decades) gradually improve their circumstances and become more established. That’s sort of what I did.
What will probably be hardest to do is to be, oh, say, in your thirties, married with two kids, have a trade, try to buy a house, find a job that pays a livable wage for you and your wife, and up and move.
That’s the reality as I see it.
