I thought about putting the 20" 1:8 Tikka virgin takeoff on it. But it shoots exceptionally well. So well that I know the next barrel won't shoot this well. Of all my rifles, this is my one & done.

Must be the size of my head, lol. I’m 6’4” and need a longer LOP when prone. I have a hard time with these negative comb stocks prone, even with high rings.

Nah, Tikka factory rail (CTR), McMillan Mountain Tracker LR, Hawkins LW highs. I think a 20minute rail and the Hawkins (highs) can be made to work at the 13.5 LOP with this stock and the NF 4x14x50 F1 combo.

I’d really like to add spacers for a 14” LOP so that I can get my trigger hand positioned right for recoil control but I feel like I’d totally lose my eye box when cheek climbing the ramp.

I already know, lol. Stock fit is such “fuckery”, thank you for your responses.

This negative comb stuff is something I’m skeptical of for dudes our size. As a hunter, I just want a clear sight picture on demand.

Whether or not it plays as big a factor for guys our size, I will tell you that I like the grip and trigger reach.

I mainly made this post to help my indecisive self come up with my next rifle build.

Well you cant go wrong.

I like old rifles, blued and wood. I just keep a rag of ballistol in my hunting pack and wipe the bluing anytime it snows, hails, or rains while im hunting.

For caliber:

I started with 300 win mag because it does everything. I put a high magnification scope on it. Excellent for long shots in the wind with a 200 grain bullet.

I ended up adding a second rifle, so i decided to go less power, keep a flat trajectory, and have a scope that goes into low power ranges. This rifle is the one i pick when im in the thick boulders and trees. Of course it would be fine on the windy flats if it was my only rifle. I picked 270 win for this. The availability of ammunition, low cost of ammunition, complete lack of recoil, and excellent performance made this an easy choice. While i do understand 30 06 is more versatile in bullet weight, I only need one bullet choice that works well, and I already have 300 win mag if i need a lot of power.

I think a lot of people rotate thru rifles because they are chasing utility, at the expense of soul. With that in mind, if I were building the rifle that Id be forced to use for everything, id be focused mainly on soul and much less so on utility.

I think for me that might be a Sharps 1874 in something like 50-90. Ladder sight. Octagon barrel. Very sparse hand cut floral engraving, just the borders and not much more. And Id build and checker the stocks myself, probably from relatively straight grained eastern black walnut, because I think fancy walnut would look garish on such a rifle. But I might splurge for a set of matching shooting sticks.

I’d start with a walnut stock.

Probably a .308 Win. 155 Scenars and Varget.

I’d keep as light as reasonably possible. 6-7lbs-ish

Model 70 action? Not really sure. If a mag system was available for an 84M that would appeal to me.

Pic rail and good rings. S2H scope? Really like a 2-8 or 10x38 (+-2). Tough, relatively light and simple.

I’m in the process of building mine right now. Shooting for 8# finished. 0-600 yards, reliable, short, balanced, low recoil. Not willing to sacrifice reliability and function, but if I can add some character/soul back in as well…

Have mine largely done.

Tikka T3k with a 18in 6cm barrel from LSwild
Currently in a rokstock though a wood lite is on order
UM tikka rings and SWFA 3-9 scope, may change over to the new S2H one

Though in reality my combo is 223, 6cm, 6.5 prc all set up identically (though intend to have the smaller 2 in RS lite and PRC in regular). I expect vast majority of hunting to be with the 6 but have options to optimize for edge cases.
