That's a bummer that you had that experience. I'm not justifying it or nor do I approve of it, but I think Idahoans have just grown weary of out of staters in general. I don't think it matters if you are a hunter or just visiting.

Slobs are slobs. Don't matter where you are from. As someone else says, it's your actions that dictate how you'll be treated by us "locals."

Do I want non resident hunters in my area?
Nope.

Do I want resident hunters in my area?
Nope.

Do I want slob unethical hunters in my area?
Nope.

Do I want responsible fairchase ethical hunters in my area?
Not really😉 But I'd most likely share a beer.

Randy

P.S. my regular hunting partner and brother are both out of state and we've never had an issue with anyone giving them crap.

A pretty decent subset of the population here are really crummy people, just the way it is and probably always will be. It’s essentially cultural and a source of pride for some it almost seems

So you just stop next to random peope to say hi? Why? Thats weird

Just because people dont give you a hug or kiss your ass, doesnt mean they "are truly ruining this amazing activity" christ you sound fragile, i get grumpy if I see a local boy in the canyons I hunt lol

You are hunting...not driving around the woods looking for new friends

Dare I ask what state your plate has on it?
yikes.

Since I rarely see NR hunters, a bad day is when you see plates from Bozeman and/or Helena. The issue is not where they are from but that they tend to bring more if they have success.

I would think that bad local attitudes would come from areas where the competion is intense and success is limited.

We always had friends that hunted the Idaho border because the Idaho season opened earlier. Likewise we used to see Idaho NR during the Montana season because Montana was open later.

The conflict occurred when some from Idaho held some Montanas at gunpoint and stole their elk. It left some hard feelings.

My hunting area was east of the border by 15-20 miles so all we ever got were the stories but it only takes one or two incidences to set the tone and it doesn't go away easily.

I think you could insert in any state ie "____________ do not like out-of-state hunters" honestly.

Like Randy, I don't like resident hunters either if they're hunting where I am :D

But yeah, there's a difference between not wanting to see others hunters (resident or nonresident) and being a dick

I am wondering if you left any pertinent details out of your post, such as:
1. Do you happen to have a punchable face?
2. Do you hunt in matching high-end camo, including your bow and sunglasses?
3. Do you wear a flat brimmed hat that you tuck your ears into?
4. When driving logging roads do you have your sunglasses on, windows down, and sweet tunes bumping?
5. Does your hunting rig resemble the type of brand-new four-wheel drive vehicle a poser would buy with no intention of ever leaving the pavement?
6. Do your interactions with other humans generally resemble the "Big Gulps" scene from Dumb and Dumber?
7. Were you waiting outside of someone else's tent in the dark and greeted them when they woke up with "Hey guys! What is our plan for the day?".

I am just looking for more specifics so I can give you some better advice. Good luck the rest of the season!

It's best to realize that this happens everywhere. Noone enjoys it when people are hunting the same grounds as them, AND 10% of any given population group are assholes, so they are going to make it very obvious-- don't let them get to you. Just ensure you're not one of them and respect your fellow hunter no matter if you wish he really wasn't there or not.

No joke... my local hunting grounds in Florida get overrun with non-residents chasing Osceola turkeys -- unfortunately, someone decided that these small, darker, quieter little devils can only be hunted here with very little public land to go around. Sucks.... but it is what it is.

Whenever I'm hunting out West, I'm always a newer resident who just moved to the area from just the town over. Cut's down on assholes.

I hunt the Dakotas a bunch. Especially ND where "blue platers" (MN residents) get hate on because YEARS ago a couple of rich MN guys thought that since they owned land in ND they should get resident landowner type privileges. I will say the younger crowd held onto the "hate" without even knowing why. Most landowners I talk to dislike people from Bismark and Fargo more than out of staters.....

One thing everyone agrees on is guys from WI are the worst......

Hunters out west get posses because their state loves the nonresident. Our money is double, triple, even five or six times higher per equal tag. Set by legislatures of those states. And, game departments are sure to maximize their funding. It’s a win win for everyone except resident hunters. And, many resident hunters let that spill over in their attitudes towards nonresidents.

I know one thing for sure though. It wouldn’t take much to change a lot of people’s actions when they are out of line. That goes both ways no matter who’s on home turf.

NR's pay through the nose to hunt. They should be able to enjoy themselves without folks hassling them. Like I said above I don't think that it's just hunters that are seeing the animosity. I think there is frustration bleeding through to a lot of interactions with out of staters.
