I see a lot of Idaho residents slamming non-resident hunters on this page. I didn’t realize there was such animosity... I come from Nevada where there is no such thing as an OTC tag. I missed on 8 different archery hunts I applied for in my home state, so I figured I’d give Idaho a try. I applied for the Controlled archery mule deer hunt in unit 54. Would anyone with familiarity with the area be kind enough to give me some pointers as to be a successful hunter in the area?
I would like to get away from other hunters if possible, but I’m sure that’s easier said than done. I’m basically going in blind. If anyone has some advice, I would be very grateful!

We've gotten protective, as over the last couple years the amount of out of state hunters has drastically increased. Draw tags have remained relatively unchanged , as they limit 10% to non residents. OTC is where its changed drastically. Imagine having an awesome area you grew up hunting, and then watching it change drastically over the course of 3 or 4 years. Now the only thing we can call in is other hunters.

Anyways, a guy I work with has experience archery deer hunting in that area, if no one chimes in on here I will ask him about it.

I don’t blame you. I’m surprised they have the OTC hunts at all. In any case, I’m a very respectful hunter, and I leave a very small footprint. It’s basically about an hour north of my usual Nevada stomping grounds. I just want to be as prepared as possible. Thank you!

Maybe residents should slam the game and fish or who ever is in control for he OTC tag quotas, I’m sure they have that in place for the benefit of the wild game population, the same residents would be begging to come hunt OTC also if they lived across the state line as we do. PM me, I can help you out.

I would like to get away from other hunters if possible, but I’m sure that’s easier said than done. I was looking at the southern portion of the unit around goose creek and deadline ridge. I’m worried those might be heavily pressured areas, but I’m basically going in blind. If anyone has some advice, I would be very grateful!
I don't think it's non-res hunters. It's people who post on an open forum about specific OTC units and specific areas in those units, and/or ask "hey where should I go, not looking for honey holes etc".

Whenever someone asks about specific places in a unit I refuse to answer in the thread because if someone Google's say unit 54 archery this thread will pop up and anyone can see where to go. The only way I'll divulge any valuable info is through PM's because otherwise it's out there for the world to see.
