Hello,

I was wondering if anyone on here has hunted unit 43 in Idaho. I have a few questions. I have never hunted this unit. I'm putting together a last minute hunt.

1.What are the deer numbers like?
2.Should I hunt more towards the bottom of the unit next 45 if there is weather?
3.Should I take a ATV to get deeper into the woods?
4.What is a realistic expectation in this unit?
5.Should I pack in?

Not looking for any honey holes! Just trying to find a good starting point......

If anyone would like to help it would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Bubba

Everyone and their brother sister and second, AND third cousins are in 43 this year. Its been a mad house. Just pick a spot and hope you get lucky.

You get out of it what you put into it.

Idaho Fish and Game's website contains the majority of the information your requesting. It provides deer population numbers, buck-to-doe ratios, hunter success, percentage of 4-point bucks harvested annually, big game records, and an interactive map illustrating trails and their legal methods of travel.

Take some time to do a little research, make a plan, and go for it.

I just spent 8 days in that unit scouting/hunting. The weather has fluctuated, but has not pushed the deer down yet. I experienced a little snow, some warm calm weather, and howling winds. The weather may be dumping some snow up high this weekend, which could push the deer lower temporarily. Also, the bucks were not exhibiting summer behavior. In other words, the bucks are there, but they are much more difficult to spot when glassing (especially with their grey winter coats). Take a tripod for your binos if you have one, it makes a huge difference.

Good Luck

Outdoorsman,

Believe me, I know about the hunt planner! I would rather go off first hand knowledge then reading about surveys that fish and game did or guessing on the populations.

I have gone over the maps, google earth and off road atlas.

I have a good spotter and love to sit and glass. Thats most of my hunting in California is spent looking through glass.

Thanks for the info....

There are many hunters in 43, but I do not believe they are of any concern. All the hunters I witnessed stayed on or near the trail. The majority seemed to focus on catching bucks coming up from getting a drink. The few who left the trail only walked a short distance up draws of interest in hopes of jumping bucks out of their beds.

I'll send you more info in a PM shortly.
