Looking at returning to Idaho this year. I'm looking at the gospel hump wilderness. I've always hunted archery in either Idaho or CO be first time with a rifle. Not a lot of selway nr A tags so I need to decide quickly. My biggest concern is the recent fires. Anybody have any info on how that area was effected? Also mid October access, I've stuck to wilderness hunts so I can hike in but don't want the truck stuck before i even get to the edge of the wilderness area.

Fires make good habitat, but in past years they can shut down all of your access points because of active fires. A lot of the gospel hump is also hard to access unless you have horses.

Mid October access gets real limited in unit 19. It’s mostly a horse unit or you’re in with everyone else on the bottlenecks.

That's kinda the vibe I've been getting from my research. I'm not against paying to be packed in especially if im gonna drive the 36 hours to get there.

Good luck finding an operation who will do a drop camp. There are wilderness hunts that aren’t so limited with access. 19 has essentially two high elevation roads and a super low elevation road.

I found one that offers it. $2500 for a full camp set up. I don't really need all that though.

That’s pretty rare for ID. Ask about success rates. I’d be skeptical. The country should be be neat. Make sure it’s not on a busy trail.

Hey Tjwjr89, how was your experience in the Gospel Hump? I've hunted the Magic Valley region for several years, but wasn't able to get a non-resident tag for it this year... so Unit 15 A Tag is what I ended up with! Better than no tag! I've been looking at the Gospel Hump, but will be on foot. I've heard it's very rugged, a lot of wolves and low elk numbers

If I were you, since you already have the NR license, I'd put in for controlled hunts and watch the return tag lists that come out.

Thanks for the advice - will definitely be putting in for the controlled hunts and keeping an eye on the return list. Have you hunted 15 before?
