"Photoshop" version with just the blood cleaned up. August 7, 2012. Not a "Monster Chugach" ram, but for my first real backcountry Yukon hunt, I was very happy. A long story, but I passed on a 170ish ram THE FIRST FOUR HOURS OF THE HUNT, as "I want to see more country"...and we walked away after getting lots of photos and video. We spent the next three days trying to find a better ram, then Dan flew to re-supply us, looked at my pics/vids...said "you need to find that ram". We found him on day 6 but got busted at a steep angle with wind coming up the back of our necks, and sheep blew out of there after winding us. I learned a lesson there, don't look a 170 Dall's in the mouth on Day One because you want to see more pretty country...your feet/knees/ankles/eyes get tired of hiking and glassing!! Dan had a bad Spring blizzard/rain mix the Spring of 2013 and in that specific part of his concession, but not in other drainages/mountain ranges, had a die-off because the usually wind-blown slopes-favored by sheep for feeding-were covered in hard ice and "THE RAM" at the headwaters of the Nation River was never seen again. Either was part of the die off or may have succumbed to old age and/or predation.

August 7, 2012. Beautiful Country. Looking NNE over my right shoulder. Sheep Mountain, Yukon Territory.

That's all I have time for tonight, and the experiences stay with us all, don't they? Whether you're now in your early 60's like me, or a younger version of myself out there, the high country calls and makes you train, train, and train some more so you can truly absorb the entire experience day by day!
I will work on getting photos from the hunt from Idaho Hell's Canyon six weeks ago posted by this coming Sunday or Monday. I will be up at DWD farm along the MS River for opening of rifle deer season this weekend.
