Going to the McCall Idaho area for Elk season this year. Weather can be 0-60' from what I have heard and it might be wet. I will be doing at least six miles a day on foot. Looking for recommendations and boots that have worked for others.

Come October I have had good luck with my Perfekt Hikers by Meindl. The provide 400 grams of Thinsulate, are waterproof and very comfortable with a limited breakin period..They are a good transition boot between fall and winter.

+1^ Perfekt transition and comfort for those cool mornings yet warmer afternoons. They keep your feet dry through those dewy mornings and shallow creek crossings. Put a ton of miles on mine through shed/hunting season and besides needing a snoseal touch up look great. I would recommend switching insoles out though.

My advice- try some on, don't mail order. I got burned sending multiple boots back to get a good fit.

Id probably go 200-400 grams insulation. I used 400 gram cabelas mountain hunters last year for the Oct. 15 hunt in Idaho and they were great. But they don't sell them anymore.

Cabelas Meindel, Lowa, Hanwag, Crispi, Scarpa, Crispi would be my picks. I wear scarpas because they fit narrow feet.

I wear my insulated Crispi Wilds by then. There is a good chance you will be dealing with snow, so bring some gaiters too. Are you hunting around the 15th? Year before last there was a foot of snow at the 8K elevation by then. Last year there wasn't, just a little rain, the snow came more towards the middle of the month if I recall.

I've hunted half a dozen times in central Idaho in October and find I rarely put insulated boots on but didn't spend the nights out camping in the temps that could go down to zero on occasion. I think the combination of moving alot and warming up by mid day I got away with not needing them and I have very cold feet problems. I always brought a pair of 400 grm. Danners just in case but haven't hit a year were the weather was that severe that they were needed every day yet. I am considering buying some Lowa Bighorns that I believe aren't too heavily insulated and if anyone has any experience I would appreciate the feedback.

My feet get cold while glassing in the morning if its cold, but mainly walking through the snow is what chills them down and makes me wear insulated boots. I'm almost always at around 8k or above though. Down around the 6-7K range the snow doesn't usually stick very long that time of year and if I know I will be that low I use my Zamberlans.

I haven't tried the Lowas, my feet are to skinny for that brand. I use a pair of uninsulated Zamberlan Voiz and they are very comfy.

I purchased the Danner pronghorn uninsulated boots for wyoming last year and they worked well. I just noticed they make a 400gm in the same boot. I might go take a look at them and look for some of the others mentioned. What type of gaiters does everyone recommend? I have never used gaiters.
