My son drew a buck tag for this unit. We have hunted for mule deer bucks in this GMU before. He wants to give Elk a go. Any recommendations would be appreciated. We have hunted the Northern and Southern parts of the unit 3 different seasons. We have also hunted around John Day Mtn only saw deer and heard lots of wolves. We get into bucks but we are mainly in deer terrain > steep open terrain > breaks. We have seen elk but very few. He will likely have both tags. We may have to ditch deer terrain for better elk terrain. He has harvested several mule deer bucks/does, WTD buck, pronghorn, but never an elk. I would love to get him on elk. He'll be a Senior in H.S. so likely one of our last good opportunities for some time d/t college. Please PM if willing to provide an assist. General areas or areas to avoid. Thanks in advance.
