Idaho Elk tag?

Idaho is divided into several areas for elk hunts. Each area offers hunters a choice of an A or B tag, each of which has its own season dates and hunt restrictions. For example, the Tex Creek zone A tag has a 30 day archery hunt for any elk and an antlerless hunt later in the year. The B tag offers a 2 week archery hunt for spikes and cows, followed by a 6 day bull hunt. You pick a zone and a tag.

Yeah I understand that. I wasnt sure if you had to buy an A-tag before a B-Tag. I have heard people call it a seconf chance tag before. Was just trying to figure why they are called A-tag and B-tag rather then lets say unit 39 rifle "bull". Or 39 archery tag. Most other states i have hunted you buy a tag for each season or you buy a buck or doe tag and its just upmtonyou to follow the seasons(archery, rifle).

Deer is open as far as areas. You buy an otc general tag or a whitetail only tag and then follow the season. You can hunt different units and each one may have different rules dates, limitations. For instance, with a general tag you can hunt antlered mule in 39 October 10-31. Or you can run to 18 and hunt whitetail antler or antlerless from October 10-Nov 3. Mule deer in 18bare draw only. Some units are draw only. Also, whitetail tags in some units have a longer season or later season.

I'm guessing the reason why some call the b tag a 2nd chance tag is that they are referring to an elk otc tag as a second chance to drawing. If you don't draw what you want, buy an otc tag. Elk tags are specific to zone and a or b. Different dates, rules, restrictions, etc., apply.

It's by zone, not unit, and it's a matter choosing option "A" or option "B". It'd be just as confusing calling it a "1" tag or a "2" tag. At the end of the day it's Idaho's way of being more attractive to hunters because their OTC tags offer a little more opportunity for the money you spend.

In the past Idaho elk was like deer where you could hunt any general unit open in the state. Now you pick a zone and a or b tag. It prevents people from hunting for three months through archery and late rifle seasons.
