Idaho Careers/Job Markets

Lewiston would be a great spot for the outdoor enthusiast. Lots of good fishing and hunting. However it does get warm in the summer.
A smart OP should be like everyone else and have to go there for work and food but don’t live there.

Everyone of my buddies moved from Lewiston and don’t regret it one bit.

I came from Portland or, and have been to almost every major city in the US for work. You can do a hell of a lot worse.

Twin falls has a lot of food manufacturing plants that you could look into as well.

I get it, it’s a “nice” city, I grew up very rural and wanted a faster pace of life in my early 20’s, decided to move here, met my wife, discovered that rural life is way better in my late 20’s, wife enjoys the conveniences that the city offers too much to move away right now. I’m still working on her, the traffic and general stupidity of people here in the valley are helping me make my case and I think I’m not too far from getting out.

Years ago I had an offer from the contractor who ran INEL west of Idaho Falls. I was going to take the new job ( Manufacturing Engineer ) but my company promoted me and gave me a good raise to stay. INEL is where they trained nuclear power plant operators. They also did simulation on nuclear accidents and how to deal with them.

Micron and Simplot are the big companies in Boise, there are also a lot of other smaller manufacturing/Tech companies popping up throughout the Boise area. The local pay rates don't really fit the cost of housing anymore so if you aren't moving here with a pocket full of equity it might be tougher on 1 income.

As others have mentioned, Micron should probably be your top target, either employment with them directly or for one of the contractors that are working on the expansion projects. ESI is the #1 out there. The Boise Airport is also undergoing constant improvements. That will continue for decades, as large scale private commercial and residential development south of the airport is underway.

Dont know anything about your industry, but lots of people commute to Spokane from the greater CDA area and you could easily find a nice place with 5 acres and a shop

But what do they pay? Do they offer anything that is 100k-120k+?
Doubt it .. I’m in industrial/ food manufacturing in a high priced metro and outfits in the Boise Caldwell area are offering 1/3 that jobs are going for around here .. and houses are at 2/3 .

Schweitzer Engineering Labs (SEL) have manfufacturing/engineering campuses in Spokane and Lewiston. They have nearly 100% of the USA market share in protective relays in the power industry and I hear they are good to work for

Micron in Boise is hiring - there's a huge expansion underway.

That monstrosity is all you see coming in from the East. It is unreal. Wait till all those houses are built between there and the river. Insanity.

There and mountain home will be a city in the next decade, there will be all the suppliers coming with it.

I've been traveling/working/hunting in Idaho since 2011 give or take. I love the state and even made efforts to move there in 2020 but I took a promotion at my current company that meant remote work was not an option anymore which killed that opportunity. I don't regret that decision but as the years have progressed dynamics have changed.

My son will be graduating and once he does, I'll be looking at Idaho again. I'm not married so "where" in Idaho is kinda open however I would like to look at areas that have a job market that align with my skills.

I'm currently a senior operations project manager in a technical field (think big defense). Background in military aviation, machine shop/production/mfg. I've googled plenty but would like to hear some first hand information from those who might know/have specific inputs.

Those who live and work in Idaho: what towns and what companies would be a place you'd look at? If you have thoughts, could you speak to the quality of working and living in said area? Are there networks I could get plugged into that you're familiar with?
Where in Texas are you from?

Lewiston is a pretty good place. Ya a little hot but rest of the year is great. Moved here from Three Forks Mt and much prefer it. Pay is on the low side but Schweitzer I hear is pretty good.
