Huntnnw

Wife and myself headed to Idaho last Thursday to hunt elk in a spot we found last year. Scouted this summer and found it to be a better spot than we thought. Leaving Thursday in 80 deg weather and hiking into our spike camp with our goats on Friday in t shirts . Hiking in we saw no sign of Elk until arriving to camp. I had prepared a spot to camp in September and dig up a tent spot. Well the elk decided it was a good spot to roll around. Sign was everywhere! I was eager to go check a cam below cam and it showed 5 bulls in last 2 weeks and 1 nice 6.
A relative restless night and kept waiting for rain to start as forecasted , but never showed. Get up and get geared up and it’s super warm and sun is going to come out hmm.. told wife let’s go over hill and glass first . Walk over hill pop out of timber and look to my right and the 6pt was standing there with 2 cows. I ranged him at 263 and 1 shot and dropped. Made our way to him and began to process him and the weather took a turn. Temperatures plummeted and rained like I hadn’t seen in a long time. Got our first load to base camp at 5:30 soaked. It continued to rain all night then turned to snow with 4” and still dumping we had to get back up there and get the rest. Last trip out was probably the most painful packouts I’ve ever done on wet deep snow. Weighed pack at 122 lbs. Got to truck at 5:30 again and we decided we needed to get the trailer and goats out as 4-8” more snow forecasted. 30 mi with chains on and arrived at home at 0130. We leave again tomorrow to hopefully fill wife’s tag. No trailer or goats this time.
