Headed to this part of Idaho or nearby for the first week of rifle deer season next month. I've already filled my tag but want to get my brother in law his first deer and also check out the area for possible future elk hunts as a backup for rifle season.

I've done a ton of research on both zones and a lot of other areas in central ID. If anyone has hunted these areas the past few years I'd appreciate the opportunity to bounce some ideas off of you and get feedback on areas to avoid as I really like to make sure I'm not going to wake up opening morning with 5 other camps in the same drainage as ours.

We're planning to hike in 3-5 miles and keep camp on our backs and have narrowed it down to a handful of areas. I know these are pretty heavily hunted units but the terrain looks favorable and the numbers look good for getting into some deer. Thanks.

I hunt some in both of these units and the elk are starting to come back. Not like it used to be but it is getting better. And yes, they get hunted pretty hard but I still find in Idaho that if you get off the beaten path and get away from the 4 wheeler crowd, you will find good hunting.

I get out to Stanley every few years with a deer tag. It's mainly about the Elk in that area and not much thought goes into deer hunting. To me it seems the farther you go downriver the more deer sign. Does and small bucks along the road with the occasional 160 buck that someone shoots at the edge of town. Not much prerut activity during rifle season and it's been warmer than usual last few years. Local told me to " get above the goats" and I can say I've learned to hike up to the rocky ridge lines and see bigger deer. Was a spot up where 36 and 36 b came up to 27 that years ago was loaded with bucks but barely see deer tracks up there now.
