In the past you didn't have to buy a license to get in the virtual line for elk/deer general season in ID. I'm just curious if buying a hunting license in ID before applying is going to reduce apps in 2025?

The $hitshow they made of the previous system with the in person selling outfitters and “friends” dozens of tags at a time and also for extra price/finders fees soured me on the whole thing. Idaho for me is for sheep long term and bears or a possible wolf or lion hunt for opportunity.

I voted not a deterrent. I have not and am not applying in Idaho this year. The License fee would be zero deterrent for me if I were planning to go.

The two guys I hunt with are applying in Idaho this year. This is not a deterrent for them.

I have to buy the license for another species but am having a hard time wanting to apply for gen elk. Might just do it and see what happens.
There is absolutely no reason for you not to apply unless you feel bad about possibly drawing a tag in the 1st draw and then not buying it, essentially keeping it from someone else in the 1st draw.

How are you playing a long game for sheep in Idaho? It's a random draw.

I put in for sheep every year just like I have done for decades and will as long as I can climb a mountain. That’s my long term.
Unfortunately your odds will be a lot less now. With the requirement to buy a license to apply for deer and elk a lot of new controlled applicants for sheep, moose, etc. will happen since people already have a license.

Maybe not. There is an upfront tag charge for the OIL draw, and it seems like a lot of people cannot connect the dots between the license purchase and access to the traditional controlled hunt draws.

I think it’ll affect deer/elk/antelope a lot more. People will still have to front the $2700 for the sheep/moose/goat.

I personally think your odds will be better. You won’t have tag grabbers who buy them in bulk and then turn them back in. With that said, you have 1st time anxiety so there will more than likely more applications. Always a crap shoot on draws. I have the unique ability to be 101 and they draw 100. Seems to be on the outside looking in. Good luck everyone.

There was a way to buy tags in bulk?
Yes, you buy for yourself, wife, cousin , cousin to be, best friend and 50 others, next up was the outfitter with his shopping list. You finally step up to the plate, nothing. Will probably be the same for me, nothing, but it seems better to me.

I'm out this year. Whether I play in the future depends on what the actual odds are for the tags. $180 isn't all that big of a deal in point states when you need the points to draw or with predictable outcomes. However, $180 annually for low odds on a ho-hum tag with zero odds increase in following years is not an attractive setup for those that dont already have ties to hunting there.

Edit to add: $180 is over double the price to apply in NM (the other totally random draw). Be interested to see how the odds compare between the two. I know NM is worth it to me to take a flyer on a good hunt if I dont have tags already lined up for the year. I dont know many ID hunts would be on par with mid level or higher tags in NM?
