Put me down as a fan of the cordless drill with auger adapter. I had an Eskimo gas auger for several years and once I tried the drill setup I sold the gas auger the next day. I use a 1/2" Dewalt brushless hammer drill and always take two 5 amp hour batteries, though I've never needed the second battery even after drilling 20 holes in 8"-10" ice.

Be sure to get one with the safety plate on it. Having your auger come out of the chuck and fall down the hole would end the fishing for the day. I made my own but you can buy them pretty cheap these days.

Recently moved to Montana and are living in a house on a lake outside Helena. Water is now hard, 10-12” . Never Ice fished before but am wanting to get started. What are y’all suggestions on getting started?

People tell me to buy tip up’s and fish from the house, not sure if that sounds appealing to me. Maybe it would be. Trout, walleye and perch in this lake.

I just spent two nights on the ice with my son in an Eskimo 949i with a big buddy heater. Turn that thing on high and it won’t be long before you are fishing in your skivies. I really like having the interlocking foam mats for the floor. The thing I love the most is my Garmin striker 4. It still amazes me that I can see a tiny jig on it.
