I got smoked on the FB CR Exchange page to the tune of $325. Did a reverse image search. Profile seemed legit.
ISO / WTB is asking for it. Will never do it again.
Lots of sellers wont sell otherwise and will argue all day long why they wont take regular PP. there are a bunch on here.Always amazes me folks will take a chance to lose their money just to save 3% by using F&F.
I'm a DumbAss. I joined a FB group specifically to buy a discontinued knife. A guy offered me the knife I was looking for. Was quick to communicate via FB Messenger. We set up a plan. I paid via PayPal Friends and Family. Guy sounded legit. Asked if the mailing address was listed correctly.
Once I got home and check the Group via LapTop not an iPhone I got a few messages from other Group members saying "that 'guy' is sketchy...use caution' ". Too late. I made the deal and made the payment.
All the posts in the Group showing the knife and our back and forth communication was gone! I attempted to message again "Cant be sent" in Red letters.
I am rather certain my $300 is long gone. But is there any recourse?
How concerned should I be over my Bank of America account, since it was direct payment from my account?
What mitigation methods can I take, if any.
Never been rolled up this bad. I've bought n sold tons of stuff on here. Other outdoor sites, etc. My "First Time" lol.
It is extremely easy to photoshop a sticky with anything you want on it. FaceTime is really your best bet anymore.Posting a WTB where anyone who stumbles across it is able to contact you is asking for punishment. Anytime you're dealing in a Facebook group you should ask the group for vouches for the individual you're dealing with before sending payment. I'd also request a timestamp (picture of the knife with today's date and both names handwritten in the same image) and ask for additional images beyond what they first send you. If they can't or won't produce any one of those they're not worth taking a chance on.
Can you photoshop a sticky note into a pic for me? I don’t know how.It is extremely easy to photoshop a sticky with anything you want on it. FaceTime is really your best bet anymore.

I agree and know. I just don’t want someone that doesn’t to read your post and think if someone puts a sticky with xx information on it, they are good to go. Plenty of people have been bitten by that thought process here over the years.I know they can be faked, but I've yet to come across a fake that didn't at a minimum make me suspicious and more commonly immediately scream fake. There are also free online tools that analyze an image and provide feedback on whether it has been manipulated. Videos are a lot harder to fake. I agree that FaceTime is probably the safest verification, but you can eliminate a lot of the uncertainty by dealing with reputable members of a given community that either have positive feedback or community vouches clearing them as being safe to deal with. I would also never send a payment that didn't provide buyer protection to someone I was unsure of and I wouldn't send money at all if I was skeptical about the seller.
I've been buying and selling on various forums and internet communities for the past 15 years and never been scammed, mostly just by applying a little common sense.
