I have seen several comparison tests where people picked the Weatherby Vanguard over the Tikka. The Weatherby Vanguard is the Howa 1500 as far as I know. I love Tikkas and have had many but they do seem to have more felt recoil than most other rifles as you get into the bigger calibers. That was the main reason they picked the Vanguard. I recently got my first Howa 1500 and the action seems every bit as smooth as the Tikka. The trigger is not as good but I add Yo Dave trigger spring to all my Tikkas and have not researched the availability of something similar for a Howa 1500. Plus, you do get a slightly better Hogue stock with the base Howa and with careful shopping you might get under $500. $299 for the Stocky's cf stock is frosting on the cake.

TIKKA T3X Lite stainless(New) or TIKKA Roughtech (New on sale or slightly used)... OR the TIKKA T3X CTR that I have listed in the classifieds (6.5cm not .308)

Thanks again folks. Definitely will be checking these out. Still have my eyes set on the more tactical options, but might be swayed by traditional rifles after watching some of the Youtube reviews on these.

CTR is a light tactical rifle. It’s the best thing in your price range.

I'm really happy with my Ruger Americans. My latest is a 18" predator in 308. At $500 it's a great value and very handy suppressed. For me, it doesn't make sense to spend more with as good as the americans shoot.
How’s the recoil? Been looking at this setup for my kids with a 7” Thunderbeast Ultra

Not too bad, but it's still 6lb 308. Might be a little stout if your kids are recoil sensitive. 130gr loads and the can tame it down quite a bit though.

I would look for a Weatherby Vanguard. They are great for the money. They are kind of like a R700 with all the flaws fixed. I have 3. My latest is a Badlands in .308. bought it for $699. it's a tack driver
Also have a .243 and .270. My personal opinion is they are a better action that the tikka. Tikka made it better when they opened the ejection port but it still has a few short comings. The only short coming for the Vanguard is weight but it's also a short coming for the tikka on the flip side.

+1 for Tikka if you have $ leftover you can upgrade stock/trigger/whatever but it’ll have a good heart.

Savage Axis XP II. I have one chambered in 6.5CM and it is a tack driver. My GF picked it up this year and shot a doe at 300 yards.

I am also in love with my Ruger M77 chambered in .300WM. It is certainly a step above the Savage Axis and Ruger American. Ruger doesn’t manufacture them anymore but you can find NIB rifles on gun broker. But you’ll be right at your $1,000 price point.

Haven’t tried a Tikka yet. Itching to. But needing to find a need for another rifle. Ha ha

I would be looking for a Steyr Pro Hunter. Highly under-rated IMO.
Those Steyr Prohunter 308s would group rocks within an inch if you could stuff em down the barrels. Best grouping rifles with all assorted ammo that I've ever shot. Just a little heavy for my taste when hunting. I bought a second one because I couldn't help myself. Both 20 inch barrels. One black, one stainless.

I went Kimber Hunter in .308 with no regrets. Stock isn’t as solid as Montana but that’s my only gripe.

Changed out a few parts on it and it shoots real well once I figured out how my form had to change with a light rifle.

Bothers me I don’t use it more with how much I like it
