Hunting in National Parks

I've hunted two NPS managed areas before. Lots of rules, lots of limitiations and the hunting wasn't that particulary good. It does appear, at least from the available wording, that this is a selective program. I don't expect anyone will be elk hunting in RMNP or bear hunting in Mesa Verde.

The order applies to 55 sites in the lower 48 states under the National Park Service's jurisdiction, according to the National Parks Conservation Association. Managers at various locations have already lifted prohibitions on hunting stands that damage trees and training hunting dogs, using vehicles to retrieve animals and hunting along trails, according to an NPCA review of site regulations the organization recently performed after learning of the order. The New York Times was the first to report on the changes.

The hunting season in the Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts, for example, would be extended through the spring and summer. Hunters in the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area in Texas would be allowed to clean their kills in bathrooms. And hunters would be allowed to kill alligators in the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve in Louisiana.

I'm for some limited hunting in our National Parks. In my state of Colorado, Rocky Mountain NP has a definate problem with way too many elk. The hire people to thin the elk and pay them to do it. They could offer tags to hunters to do the same thing and make a lot of money instead of paying to do it. They have a similar problem with Bison in Yellowstone NP.

Last I recall, it was sheriff and company that did the culling.

I don’t see the public being invited to do the same…because you’re then dealing with a higher liability of stupidity.

What a concept, let the F&G depts MANAGE ungulates through hunting which is easily controllable, raises money for the F&G and gets that high protein meat to families.

That^ vs throwing a bunch wolves that cost a fortune to manage and raise holy hell.

I wonder what he means about more access to wilderness area. I sure wouldn't be for any relaxing of the rules for wilderness areas.

I’d be for allowing non residents access to hunt in Wyoming wilderness areas without someone to hold their hand like the other 49 states would be ideal for that project…
