I am a chocolate lab guy myself. My current one is a little English bitch that weighs in at a whopping 48 pounds. I haven't done a whole lot of duckhunting in my life, she's mainly just a good old river and family dog, but we do get out every year and chase the grouse and Ptarmigan around. I sure do love bird dogs.

I told her I don't bring my work home with me and don't trust the workmanship of other installers.

Don't know of any rescue sites gun dog breeders.com has started dog listing though

Forestry guy sounds like your dog is awesome I won't be able to claim mine is anything american except bred the mother of mines parents were both imports and the sire is an import

I will say that he is a good dog. I have seen others that handle a lot better than he does. But those were all trained everyday for competition and mostly labs. I like that he will think for himself even though can be stubborn at times. He just has that drive to find birds and has a good nose to do it with. Oh and he is only weighing in at 55-60 lbs. Perfect for pulling back into the boat or carrying.

I have heard people say they would rather hunt without their gun than without their dog. I have a 5 year old male G.W.P. and it has been a great dog. He has incredible drive and nose. He has lots of energy, but with exercise he is plenty controlled. He is also very good with my 2 yo daughter even though she tortures him. Enjoy the training and the joy of hunting with a good dog. Here is a couple pics.

Does anyone know of rescue sites for dogs that are not up to snuff for field trials but will work as hunting dogs?

I got my Britt mix from NBRAN. He's got a heckuva nose and will run all day. Took me three trips to get him used to the gun, now I can't even take one out for target shooting without him getting twitchy. He's really easy going, loves kids and dogs but is on high alert for birds and bunnies. We take him camping/hiking/canoeing.

I don't know what he's mixed with, but I like tell people he's part Britt, part mountain goat & part donkey. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1411337315.675597.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1411337434.355762.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1411337457.787777.jpg

Hobbes. Where is your Griff out of? Somewhere in MT? I would love to get a griff but this website has cost me a lot of the money I would've bought a dog with and them some.

As far as sharpness in the breeds that's being spoke of, I think people that think DD's are sharp dogs aren't getting the difference between DD's and GWP's. All DD's could be classified as GWP's...technically, but not the opposite. I would get a DD if I didn't have my heart set on a WPG, but I would not get a GWP. Breeding standards are way different. Just like I would get a DK over a GSP. I would actually get a Pudelpointer if I didn't want a WPG. Same thing with them and breeding selectively.

You WPG guys...how do they handle heat? I'm hoping to get a new dog in the next few years, and I want to get a versatile for the off-chance that quail start making a comeback down here. I'm eyeing the wirehaired breeds(PP, DD/GWP, and WPG). A strong water dog is key, but I want one that can handle Sept dove hunts down here, then pick up a limit of ducks in the AM and point some quail in the PM during the winter.

From what I have read heat can be an issue for them and you really have to watch them more than the shorter haired breeds. If I lived in an area with a lot of great I would probably look into the DK deutch kurzhaar or gap or a vizla. The hzp I attended had 3 dd's and as wirehaired vizla that had probably thee smoothest shortest coat possible without getting kicked out of the breeding program. That vizla did awesome except for the water work it just didn't have to coat for the colder water if the water had been warmer in have no doubt it would have done great.

My Brittany is now 11 going on two! Her drive and energy is just off the charts. Hunting season can’t get here soon enough. After a summer of hiking she’s been watching me pack the backpack to go big game hunting and she’s even driving the poor girls at the kennel nuts.

About a month ago it rained for the first time in months. Just so happened to be the same day my Kuiu and Firstlite packages arrived. So, of course, I had to try on all my new gear which included a pair of gaiters so I had to put my boots on. Well this causes poor Sage to lose her mind, “bark bark bark bark.” I turn on Pandora and tried to ignore her but that didn’t last long. Since I was dressed I decided to load the pack with 60#’s kitty litter and go for a walk. An hour or so later I’m back on the couch and Sage is back in, bark, bark, bark, bark mode. Off comes all the camo and I put it away in the Tupperware. After about a half an hour the barking stops as she has popped the lid off the Tupperware and is now in “lick lick mode” as she pulled one of the gaiters out and was licking it. Well that’s a whole lot better than barking so an hour later I go to bed.

The next morning once out of the shower, I’m like where the heck is my dog as she is always waiting for breakfast after my morning shower. I finally find her down stairs next to the front door. She had somehow broken into the spare bedroom. Opened the closet door, climbed her way up high enough to pull my shotgun vest off its hanger and dragged it down to the front door to use as a pillow. It’s her way of ensuring that I don’t forget her in the morning.

This was a month ago and it has just gotten worse by the day. Bird season can’t get here soon enough! I’m pretty sure that neither one of us will be happy nor content until such time she’s full of burrs and smells like a swamp dog!

Brittany’s aren’t for everyone :)

Lizzy became content for the moment Saturday morning.

Breeding standards are way different.

Just a wee bit of an understatement. However on that front the German Wirehair alliance seems to be trying to bring the breed back to being hunting centered and not as close to the AKC show circus by modeling their breed requirements after the vdd/jghv system.

NM burrs look meaner than Wa burrs!

"Damn boss I did it again!" :)

It honestly looked worse than it was. It was mainly just some velcro-ish leaves that wore out as she dried. I thought it was going to take me a couple of hours to get her clean though.

I took it as her trying to make her own ghille suit to blend in a little better :)

Regardless of the breed, it is imperative as a buyer that you do your homework. When I was researching GWP breeders, I wasn't looking for show ribbons. I was looking for lots of photos of dead birds and dogs on point. Find a HUNTING breeder. When I ran my dog through a NAVDHA natural ability test this year, I got several compliments about my dog's range and his drive. When I told them where I got him, none of them were surprised. In fact, one guy watching asked me if it was a Bone Point dog, and said he could pick them out of any crowd.

If you want dogs good with kids, find a breeder that has a family. If you want one that is good in the water, find one that hunts ducks. I purposely chose a smaller dog for hunting chukars, and guess what the breeder does lots of? You guessed it, chasing old red legs.
